The two things that changed my thinking on drinking mainly are the birth of my two kids (role model crap!) and the penalty for drinking and driving. I make my living behind the wheel.

    I’m with you, Peddler.

in reply to: What Do You Look for in a Fly Shop? #10709

I think a lot of the fly shops tend to focus so much on having the “top of the line” gear that they neglect to carry enough entry-level stuff.  They may have a Cortland blister pack or two sitting back in a corner somewhere, but if you ask the sales staff about those rods, they often seem like they’re almost ashamed to have that stuff in the store.

The big-box stores (Bass Pro around here, and Academy Sports to a lesser extent) pick up most of the entry-level market, since they’re not afraid to sell a $75 rod and reel combo.

Where the fly shops lose out is that the entry-level items are a good recruiting tool for new customers (an analogy springs to mind of the proverbial crack pusher who gives away the first rock for free).  If you can sell a person that first rod, you just might get them to come back later for an upgrade rod, flies, vest, tying stuff, and the gazillion other must-have items that keep us all flirting with poverty.

I’d like to try the casting analyzer, even though I have a sneaky suspicion I know the problem areas it will detect.

I’m a big fan of Fly South here in Nashville.

It can’t account for good, but different casting styles.

Hmm – didn’t you question in a previous thread whether different casting “styles” truly exist?

It has been a long, long, LONG time since I had any contact at all with AOL, but if memory serves me correctly, you can dial up through AOL, then open Internet Explorer to use for browsing the Net, can’t you?

If so, it might be worth a try to attempt accessing the site through IE once or twice.

The reason Simms coats are $400 is because they come with your very own Deed to the River.

I’ve never fished that area, but I’ve caught some on other lakes closer to home.

The laptop wasn’t a Gateway, was it?

Zach, did your laptop spontaneously combust during Commercial Law?

I think Boga Grips are wonderful for handling just about anything.

You just don’t run into a Red Fox everyday.

Heh – I actually have a red fox living up the road from my house, so as a matter of fact, I DO run into a red fox every day.  In truth, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I tend to see him every few weeks whenever I happen to be driving home relatively late in the evening.  Mike’s fox was photographed in far more scenic surroundings though.  Of course, I’ve never seen one out in the middle of the day before, so Mike’s fox probably was insane or had rabies or something.

As far as Zach’s question about where to catch Muskie in Tennessee, actually quite a few of Tennessee highland reservoirs have at least small populations.  I’ve never really fished for them, but I have heard Melton Hill has some great muskie fishing.  Fred McClintock catches some monsters on Dale Hollow pretty regularly, though I understand it’s mostly done by deep-water trolling.  I have been told that Center Hill, Watauga, and Kentucky Lake have at least a few here and there as well.  I assume Norris does too – at least it used to, since that’s where the state record comes from.

I’m not going to claim that I bird hunt a lot, but when I do, I shoot a Remington 1187 Premier or a Browning Gold Hunter.

    I’ll send you an e-mail.

I had Plank for Contracts; Lloyd for Commercial Law.

Yes – part of the time.

Didn’t mean to start a political discussion.

Hey, don’t apologize – I’m a sucker for political discussion.  I am an expert on my own opinion.   ;D
