Very strong.  Incredible report.  I wish I had that time.  I used to work in SW Colorado and spent many days on the San Juan, I love that river.  Nothing better than big fish, small flies, tiny tippet, and strong currents.

Were you hiking out of Wilderness Ranch?  If so, I used to be a trail guide there for 3 years.  If you are ever back there make sure to bring your rod, I caught many a trout on my trips and cooked them up for the campers.  Very stupid fish, don’t forget some of the high lakes out there as well, they offer some real nice fishing opportunities.  I miss those summers out in the mountains, thanks for bringing back good memories.

Do you remember what trail you took?
Who were your guides if I can ask?  I still have a lot of friends that work there.

500 shots a morning?  Is that right?  If so….holy crap!!

Cypert minnows always seem to do the trick for me.  Any of the usual colors work, you just have to find them first, and when you do stay put and keep fishing.  Also, make sure you are using the right line and getting down deep enough for them.  White bass fishing is fun, but it sure does get crowded when the runs are going.  Going during the week is key if you can swing it.

I have fished with Billy Trimble a couple of times, and I would recommend him as well.  He will work hard for you all day long and he is a fun guy to fish with.  He does fish out of Aransas Pass which isn’t too far down the road.  There is also another guide named Sally Moffett.  I have never fished with her, but met her on a couple of occasions and she is pretty sharp and worth looking into.  She also does kayak trips which can be a blast.  Another guide that always seem to be catching fish is Captain Dean Thomas.  He specializes in kayak fishing, but also has a boat.

I have had decent luck using guides down there, but it seems every time I go on my own with my kayak I always end up catching more fish without paying the 500 bucks for a full day guided trip.  There are a ton of places to take a kayak and do very minimal paddling to get into a bunch of fish, but at the same time it is nice to get poled around all day looking for reds.

It’s big trout time down in that end of the world right now, if you are looking to hang a big speckled trout look at some of the conventional tackle guys down there.  I know that could be considered blasphemy on this board, but during the winter there are some big fat trout to be caught, but if its redfish you are after stick with the fly rod.  There are low tides and clear water typically this time of year.

I am not trying to hijack the thread but this mako was hooked off the Texas coast while snapper fishing…look at the holes in the ocean behind him.  What an incredible fish!!  I need to chase those on the fly.  Great report.

in reply to: New Costa Del Mar 580 Silver Mirror Shades #29849

    Zach,
Thanks for the heads up on the new costa’s.  I have been very interested in silver color since your podcast.  I have the copper 580 lenses and they are, in my opinion, the best lens on the market.  I was very skeptical of the heavy price tag, but once you put them on it is hard to go back.  “Sharp” is the one word I can use to describe it.  I even purchased five other pair of high end glasses and used them next to the 580 lens, of course I returned the other five once I had made my decision to stick with the 580’s.

I was on my way to the river and had to retire my old Ross Reels hat.

The surf is always a good option, but I usually find that you need to be out early in the morning cruising the beach looking for birds or guts in the waves.  I have had some days where you get tired of catching trout and ladyfish in the surf, but for me it is usually on or off in the surf.  Also, there are some oil field cuts on the west side of highway as you are driving towards port A from corpus.  Get a hook-n-line map from academy.  They have a wade and kayak fishing version in that area that shows a lot of good places.  Also you can try the padre island seashore, but that is a little bit of a drive from where you will be, but there is a good wade in spot at the bird island boat ramp.

Very nice interview Zach, I agree with some of the others that this is one of your best.
