I really appreciate your comments guys. I still have so much to learn when it comes to photography and fly fishing. Even though I don’t post much, I’m always reading and looking at the fantastic photography that is posted on this fine site. Thanks again.

Graham, that dancer seemed to pose and look right at the camera.

Here are a few from today.

    The flyer…

    The Pole dancer…

    And egg layer…

Mike, great colors on that little guy for sure some really cool images!

Jay, the detail on that dragon fly is just sick, that’s crazy sharp.

    Graham, another great looking shot!

Amazing captures for sure guys, thanks for sharing.

We’ll get out and shoot soon Graham. I’m thinking sometime in late September or early October for some fall colors up in the sierras. Weekdays are tough for me since I work nights, kind of have to sleep during the day.

Love the Dragon fly shots. I saw one of these at the Fisherman’s Spot. The wings are amazing on these creatures.

Graham, the ball head is okay I guess, I have to make sure to tighten the knobs real good or else my lens and camera start to slump over from the weight of the big lens.

I pretty much find a subject (dragon fly) who is cooperative and try and set up quickly. Today I went out and had a really tough time with the wind and finding subjects that would stay still or come back to the original perch. I took about 60 images and only a hand full didn’t have motion blur from the wind blowing the reeds around.

Also it was a bit overcast and the dragon flies were slow to show up. I was scratching my head wondering where they had all disappeared to.

These here are from earlier today, one was a bit on the brown side. the other is just a blue damsel. I’m kind of tripping out on all the colors on these little guys. There are these really dark almost black ones flying around, but they never land anywhere near me, they just fly around chasing other dragon flies around, some green ones as well.

Really nice shots, I’d like to know you lens, camera set up.  Also were you using a tripod and did you crop the shots?  I’d like to improve my macro game.

I shot these with a Canon 7D and a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS. The IS was turned off as I was shooting on a tripod. All the images were cropped according to my liking. All the images were shot at 200mm. I tried to get in as tight as the lens allowed which my guess is about three to four feet or so.

Excellent stuff guys! Like the Grayling shot, awesome with all the water dripping. That whale is to funny.

    in reply to: 50D or 7D #71003

I really enjoy my 7D. I upgraded from a XTi. I have never owned a 50D so I can’t offer up any advice on that body. I just picked up a used 5D classic and so far I am more impressed with the 7D, both are nice cameras though.

Those Osprey are really quite amazing fishers. Great captures for sure!

in reply to: Sharpest possible photo #69904

I just got the Acratech GV2 ballhead in the mail.

Now I need the carbon legs.

in reply to: Sharpest possible photo #69902

Here are a couple of examples. The first shot is handheld bracing myself against a small wall behind me.

This second shot is from a cheap $30 tripod. It seem blurry to me. Yet the photo above seem much sharper. Both photos are linked back to the EXIF data.

    Thanks again for the help.

As far as fly fishing goes I will have to adjust to days of shooting photos of fish and have my days where I could just go out and enjoy a nice cay of fly fishing with no camera.

I picked up a nice ballhead, the Acratech GV2, now I need to get me a nice tripod. I’m really going to look into getting a quality tripod that I will not have to upgrade for a very long time.

    in reply to: Should I be bummed . . . #70033

I wouldn’t be bummed, you have one of Canon’s best zoom lens around hand down. It’s more of a marketing ploy from Canon to sell a newer lenses. The first thing that’ll start happening is people will start selling a perfectly good lens in oder to get an unproven newer version of the current 70-200L 2.8 IS. I love my 70-200 it’s a heavy beast but worth every penny. There is no reason I’d be getting rid of mine anytime soon.
