Okay, so I was inspired by all you guys going out and taking some amazing photos. I had to go to the local pond to try and get some images of my own. I was trying to find a dragon fly with intact wings, but it seem that the dragon flies were all missing small parts on the wings. Anyhow here are a few I photographed.

Nice sharp images. Those things are an engineering marvel.

Really nice shots, I’d like to know you lens, camera set up.  Also were you using a tripod and did you crop the shots?  I’d like to improve my macro game.

I shot these with a Canon 7D and a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS. The IS was turned off as I was shooting on a tripod. All the images were cropped according to my liking. All the images were shot at 200mm. I tried to get in as tight as the lens allowed which my guess is about three to four feet or so.

    Hey Benny,

Graham, the ball head is okay I guess, I have to make sure to tighten the knobs real good or else my lens and camera start to slump over from the weight of the big lens.

I pretty much find a subject (dragon fly) who is cooperative and try and set up quickly. Today I went out and had a really tough time with the wind and finding subjects that would stay still or come back to the original perch. I took about 60 images and only a hand full didn’t have motion blur from the wind blowing the reeds around.

Also it was a bit overcast and the dragon flies were slow to show up. I was scratching my head wondering where they had all disappeared to.

These here are from earlier today, one was a bit on the brown side. the other is just a blue damsel. I’m kind of tripping out on all the colors on these little guys. There are these really dark almost black ones flying around, but they never land anywhere near me, they just fly around chasing other dragon flies around, some green ones as well.

Hey Benny, I know we have talked about going out for a days shooting, for years, and haven’t done it.  We gotta do it!  I can go this week, anyday after Tuesday…

I have some good bait for attracting dragonflies…

    Including fake houseflies

And fake dragonflies.  The photos I’m posting here were taken back in 06, and my latest realistic orange dragonfly looks much better than this one…

The wings on these critters are amazing

We’ll get out and shoot soon Graham. I’m thinking sometime in late September or early October for some fall colors up in the sierras. Weekdays are tough for me since I work nights, kind of have to sleep during the day.

Love the Dragon fly shots. I saw one of these at the Fisherman’s Spot. The wings are amazing on these creatures.

I like how you’ve got a shallow DOF but not too shallow to lose detail in the insect. Great shots. Same to you Jay and everyone else.
