Has anyone looked at these?  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+-+65%22+Carbon+Fiber+Tripod/9363119.p?skuId=9363119&id=1218093003220

Edited to say I looked at it today and was completely UNimpressed.

in reply to: iPad – a worthy photographer’s tool? #71133

I just installed the SmugMug photo App on mine.  While I only use it for my own personal files and am strictly a hobbyist, I can imagine that this would be an excellent way for a pro to show his or her portfolio to a client.  At least from my limited perspective, it is the best method I have ever encountered for viewing a set of photos; much better than any of the web sites I have seen.  Flicking through images with my finger tip is a better experience than “clicking” them, and perhaps a better experience than paging through printed images.  From a client perspective, the tool is a 10 (or maybe an 11).

On the downside, the Smugmug app still seems to be “buggy” (if that is a word).  Once I started using it, I decided to make some additional galleries from photos that had been stored in a generic “other” file.  While it worked fine in my main smugmug account, I had to re-load the app to get my changes recognized.

Non-photo related, but relevant to media — the Wall Street Journal charges MORE for a subscription through the IPad App than they do for any other format.

I don’t know if he will see the thread, but you might want to PM Allan Dozier for thoughts on the aesthetics and function of wooden drift boats.

I fish from a Hobie Outback.

in reply to: Real Name Policy #43964

Interesting post and thoughtful reply.  I still favor full names.  My name and profile are out there for anyone to search.  I don’t post (or say) anything I would be reluctant for my wife, children, parents or clients to read.

Generally speaking, I don’t care to interact with anonymous people.  While I do participate in a few other boards, I know the people behind the “handles.”

I suspect that this board is a refuge for people of a similar mindset.  There would probably be more traffic if anonymity was allowed, but the problems of anonymity would surface and detract from the community of like-minded fishermen and photographers.

While I respect alternative views on the issue, I respectfully disagree with them, as well.

I just got one last week as a very unexpected gift.

Hey, the way I see it, if your wife buys it then it is free.

Good find, Neal.  It went up in price a few dollars on line.  I will check it out at my local store tomorrow.

Better products for kids — darn near impossible to find waders sized right for children, especially young ladies.

in reply to: Backyard cooking enough with all this fishing talk #47882

Every smoker has its pros and cons.  Some of the downsides on ceramic are cost, weight, less mobility and limited capacity, to name a few.  On the plus side, they hold a consistent heat, retain moisture and go very easy on fuel.  A steady heat at night will hold until morning, usually without any need to get up.  (A good trick is to have a drip pan, because the fats dripping to the hot coals creates some unhealthy stuff and causes temp spikes.)  All in all, I like my ceramic and would buy it again without hesitation.  30 lbs  of pork is about the max it will fit.

On the other hand, I like helping to cook whole hogs every now and then.  Obviously, that takes a different type of cooker, involves less sleep and usually involves more adult beverages.

So what’s the cook time on say a Boston Butt in an Egg versus in a cheaper smoker?  Does the Egg accelerate it, or convey a different flavor, or just look cool?  I am not knocking it – I think those things are fascinating; I’m just wondering.

    Zach

This is a very rough rule of thumb, but somewhere in the range of 1.5 hours for every pound of butt, with a cook temp of 220.  Could be as quick as 1 hour or as slow and 2 hours.  No way of knowing –  it will hit a temp plateau (or maybe two of them) where the meat temp stalls

Steve, that set up is awesome.  I also prefer a ceramic cooker.  Mine is a grilldome.  www.grilldome.com.  The company is headquartered in Atlanta.  After extensive research, I bought one a few years ago as I was passing through town.

    Allan, I have Photoshop CS.

now its time to start lens shopping.
    any suggestions?

penn camera (local dc shop), bh photo, ebay, craigslist etc?

The D70 is a very capable camera body — I bought one when they first came out.  I have enjoyed it very much and still do.  I am sure you will, too.

I am a fan of B&H photo for lenses and other equipment — honest folks and fair prices.  Personally, I have not had much success finding good deals on Craigslist but maybe maybe you will do better.

Maybe the bigger question is “what lens do you want?”  The 24-70 kit lens that came with that body is certainly capable for every day use and maybe you can find a good deal from someone that wants to keep their D70 body as a spare but has otherwise upgraded to the newer models and lens. (I am not suggesting there is anything wrong with your camera — there is not, so don’t think you need an “upgrade” any time soon).  If you want to stay with one lens and keep the price within reason, the 18-200 is by all reports a good every day choice.

Interesting idea but there are some downsides.  Officers would be motivated to ticket everything and an adversarial relationship could develop between the officers and law abiding sportsmen.  Maybe a middle ground would work — reasonable license fees combined with much higher fees for violations?

I don’t know why, but I get check at a high frequency level.  They are always pleasant meetings and conversations.  I would hate to think that the officer was looking for every imaginable way to take my money because that would change the dynamics of the encounter.

While I don’t have first hand knowledge of the issue, I hear reports that our judges don’t hold people’s feet to the fire on game violations (unless it is a federal matter).

Lasik did wonders for my distance vision (still 20/20 or better after @ 10 years) but despite my tender age I find that my close up vision is failing.

I use threaders for small bugs and keep a pair of reading glasses in my shirt pocket or around my neck when tying something small.

in reply to: Orvis hooks? #58013

I had a very favorable view of Orvis branding strategy, but it sure didn’t hold true when I bought the fly drying wheel.  Fortunately, they took it back.

CCI status is the first thing I look for when trying to select a guide. I suppose everyone is looking for something different when they book a guide, but invariably, I am looking for someone that will help take my skills to the next level.  I will certainly acknowledge that there are many excellent non-CCI guides.  However, I have had such good learning experiences with CCI guides that I am very reluctant to consider a non-CCI guide when I will be fishing salt or some other type of big water.  Such environments require different skills from what I use on my usual trips to remote creeks.

I have a very good understanding of casting dynamics. However, putting those dynamics in action, and self diagnosing my casting flaw de jour, is sometimes more difficult.  With CCI guides, I know the guide will be able to communicate the quick tip that can make for a much better day (probably for both of us).

I would like to become certified.  I plan to look into the process during the SE Conclave this year.
