I grew up there (late 70’s through 1986) and [hopefully] survived TMI.  Thanks for the head up.  I am a fan of Hardy gear so it looks like I need to get back to see family and friends.

in reply to: Good deal on CS4 or free Photoshop Elements 6.0 #65760

For goodness sake, if you can get CS4 for 1/2 off – do it! I find that improbable though. Full version vs. Photoshop version is a non-sequitur. Many professionals I know use tablets exclusively – not even using a mouse any longer. I find 1/2 off any Adobe product almost “too good to be true”. shannon

It does seem like a good deal and almost certainly too good to be true for anything Adobe — but it is there (maybe with wiggle room). I went back to double check and here is exactly what it said:

    Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe would like to recognize the creative talents of our valued Wacom tablet customers in working with digital images. Experience the power of the gold standard in digital imaging, Adobe® Photoshop® CS4 software, at a great price. The groundbreaking technology is intuitive and gives you even more powerful creative tools and greater control to achieve the most sophisticated results. If you can imagine it, you can create it with Adobe Photoshop CS4
    .

Then it says save 50% off.  Digging deeper as if I were to take advantage of the deal, it says

Get Adobe Photoshop CS4 for up to 50% off

To take advantage of this offer, we need a few things— your name, your email address, and the serial number and model number of your BambooFun tablet

Maybe that is the catch — “up to.”

They don’t advertise the deal on the package but it shows up as part of product registration.

I already paid full price :o) for an older version several  years ago but I thought someone else might be interested.

Thanks to both of you for the advice and insights.

in reply to: Computer preferences for Photoshop or alternatives #65637

I don’t think this is a real poll about what system is best and what software you should use. You already know what system youre gonna buy, a mac!

I use a Laptop PC with Photoshop and Lightroom. No Problem at all.

Definitely not a poll about what is best –

in reply to: Shooting Film #65431

I used to do darkroom work as a hobby, in HS (82-86) and some in college.  Once I finally got past my school debts, I was gathering my own darkroom equipment to get back in the game.  I eventually had all the gear and was preparing to build a darkroom in the attic of my house.  I gave up on the idea due to the cost of construction (walls, insulation, temp controls, electric and plumbing), and the declining benefit of a darkroom when digital became an option.

B&W darkroom work is/was great fun.  Digital, however, has really brought me back to the hobby at an affordable price.  They are not museum pieces or nearly as good as “real” B&W that pros and artists reach, but I can get a nice enough B&W effect through Photoshop.

And finally, who are we kidding?  My darkroom work was never so great that it was “clearly” better than what I can do with PS (not that I am very good at PS, either).  Talented people with great paper, great film and great equipment can beat PS results, but that is still a high hurdle for even serious hobbyists.

If young people get the chance to learn darkroom work, it is a great way to learn to see light in a different way.  I appreciate the the opportunity to learn those lessons.  However, I don’t ever see myself going back and probably won’t ever shoot my film cameras again.

I miss the “hands on” darkroom experience — working in the dark, seeing the image appear, dodging and burning, the smell of the process, a drying line of photos, etc., but all good things come to an end.  The tech side of computers can be pretty cool, too.

in reply to: Any thoughts on this tent? #30838

Thanks for all the comments, including the warnings on condensation.

Andrew, I notice your tent at Deep Creek and that is what got me looking for a solo tent and exploring the Mountain H line.  They make great products but this particular one is probably not be their best.

    Brian, thanks for those links.

in reply to: Trout Truck? #30504

Aaron…I checked out the Fleetwood but decided I’d rather have the driftboat along (although you could put a canoe or kayak on the Fleetwood). If you are going the trailer route… also look at http://www.adventuretrailers.com/ along with a rooftop tent.

Another reason I went the camper top route…in addition to pulling a boat…I can pull into a Walmart parking lot or truck stop and sleep inside without drawing a lot of attention.

That is a great looking truck and a beautiful boat.  The Walmart option is a plus and no doubt there is a tremendous advantage to being able to pull in late at night without a need to set up anything.

Thanks for the link on the pop up alternative.  I will check those out.  So far, I have a canoe, a fishing-rigged kayak and pontoon.  I figure I can take some or all of them along with a pop up. I would do what you did if I was pulling a real boat.

Neal, I know it was not your goal, but you have all but convinced me that I need that lens.

Or, you can just shove an open can up the bird’s arse.

From here foreword, this pic should be required viewing for everyone considering the “chicken dance” at their wedding.

From the profile you are describing, you will be fine with whatever you get.

In the south, barbecue is a noun.  http://barbecueisanoun.com/ Roughly speaking, it is smoked meat and a cultural obsession in some circles.  (My neighbor’s son made that film.)

Sauce is an excellent gift and, as you probably know, a great way to explore regional differences in barbecue styles.  (For example, western North Carolina tends to use tomato based sauces, while eastern NC uses a vinegar based sauce w/o tomato.  Maurice’s mustard-based sauce comes from Columbia, SC, 90 miles south of Charlotte.)  I enjoy finding new sauces, as well.   Yesterday, I stopped at Bridge’s BBQ Lodge in Shelby, NC, on my way to the Davidson River.

For BBQ aficionados, sauce should complement the meat rather than be the basis for flavor.  If you want to explore the world of barbecue (a field with followers every bit as rabid as fly fishers), a ceramic smoker is a great place to start.  My personal favorite is the grill dome (http://www.grilldome.com).  The small one will be fine for family use.  (I have the larger one and have cooked for 40 or more people on it.)  In the US, the most recognized name in ceramic smokers is the Big Green Egg.  Metal smokers are fine, too, but they tend to require more monitoring.

The cooking style calls for low heat and long cooking times.  I  have had pork on the grill dome for over 18 hours.   Smaller amounts of meat will take less time so you can get it done in 8 hours, or so.

Without trying to be too complicated, chicken on the grill with sauce is good, too.  Brush the sauce on about 10 minutes before the chicken is done.  However, that is grilled chicken rather than BBQ.

Just booked the Elk Cabin.  Will look at flights tonight, not anything direct from AZ to NC or TN.  Looks like the easiest thing to do is fly into Asheville and drive in from there.  Can we expect the temps to be in the fifties?  Trying to figure out how to pack for my two year old.

    thanks,
    a

In nearby Bryson City, NC, the average low for October is 38 and the average high 71.

I helped make at least one small fisherperson happy.  Fish was $4.99/lb, the picture is just a snapshot, but the smile is priceless.

Watching the same 5 year old learn to surf was fun, too.

in reply to: Is a 6wt overkill for the Smoky’s? #29372

It is always good to have a new rod, but I would not consider buying a 6 wt for this trip.  My choices:

    7 ft, 5 wt bamboo.
    8 ft, 4wt glass.

These fish will rate on beauty but rarely on size.
