Guys I think the thing to do here is to write fishpond directly to make your arguments.  I’ve got a longstanding no politics rule here and even though no one has crossed any lines, I just don’t think this conversation can end well. I am going to lock this thread but I’ll leave it up so your comments can be seen.

    I agree with Tom.

    Ideal magazine specs would be 17 inches X 300 pixels = 5100 wide by 11 inches x 300 pixels = 3300 tall.

    5100 X 3300 is 16.8 megapixels.

There is absolutely no need to go any higher for journalism purposes.

I have great faith in the Japanese fear of change.

D400 also offers a smaller physical build with pro-grade weathersealing.  I am not hauling around a flagship body ever.  Too much backpacking.  I wasn’t even wild about the size of the D700; that thing is pretty huge, too.

Incidentally I saw a used D700 body on Amazon for $1000.  That’s pretty much a steal.

TFO is truly owned by the nicest people in fly fishing.  Within the industry there’s a somewhat grumpy outlook on them; I think their competitors tend to believe that TFO owes its success strictly to its low prices and its off shore production.  But it’s been at least 5 years since the other manufacturers also almost all went offshore, and TFO still owns that market.  That’s because TFO understands customer appreciation better than anyone else.  I mean that.  They get out there and show their banner and their friendly faces at shows and shops all over the country.  Rick Pope is a marketing genius and also a really nice guy.  Rather than grouse about their success, I think the other industry types would do well to learn from TFO.  Whereas a typical fly fishing company will send one rep, who may or may not be all that friendly and is not likely to be well known, to set up a booth, TFO will show up with a fly shop’s worth of staff and a number of personalities.  That’s expensive, but it’s smart business.  I’d be copying the hell out of them if I owned a rod company.

Those bluewater rods have fiberglass in them, which is why they are thicker, but they are also almost indestructible.  If I were going mako shark fishing again, I’d get the 10-13 weight *for sure.*  I know it’s not going to break and sharks are not dainty, and neither are their flies.

Here’s a blue dog; you’ll catch a ton of them in any chum line off shore almost anywhere in the world:

I would say don’t use flash and shoot at ISO 3200 or higher to up the film grain, but I have no idea why you’d want to take backlit, grainy pictures like those.

The most remarkable thing about digital photography is how much better it made photos generally.

By my count, you’ve got the Snap T and the Double Spey (those two set up on opposite sides of the body), then the Snake Roll and the Single Spey/Switch cast.

I’m using a Scott T2h 13’6″ 7 weight and an SA Skagit Extreme integrated head with sink tip in those photos above.
