We’ve had this kind of discussion here before.

Nu2Trout, I may be about to blow your mind, but I don’t even own a vest.

There is an architectural philosophy simply stated as “form follows function”.  Tie this in with evolutionary theory, and the end result would be very similar products for the same function.  All cars have a motor and 4 wheels, all mousetraps look the same, all wading jackets are dull colors with lots of pockets.

I think Dave’s point is well taken.  The price of some of the “fly fishing fashions” is way out of wack considering they are designed to wear out in the rough and to get fish slime all over them.

This is a good point too.

There are definitely fish that are spooky enough to react to bright colors.

Just to check, I typed in “wading jacket” and then hit the Images tab on Google Images.  Here’s what came up:

Gee, think we’ve reached a singularity?  The only exceptions I see are the Simms Orange jacket and the Loop jackets.  And honestly, where’s the science that says a solid green coat is less visible than a different color?  What if your river doesn’t have any trees right beside it?  Wouldn’t true camo or sky-color make more sense?

    Hey Dave –

While I would almost certainly never wear the checked coat, personally I was happy to see it at the show.  Why?  Because every time I go to put on my waders and wading jacket, I become Tanny McTan.  There is so little willingness in the expensive outdoor products industry to go out on a limb, it makes for complete repetition in product lines.

Think about it.  Practically every single fly fishing wader or jacket is some shade of tan, light green, or maybe grayish.  It’s a very limited spectrum.  Yes, we want to avoid spooking fish, and yes, that limits the applicability of bright colors.  But are patterns–all patterns–necessarily forbidden?  Don’t your clothes have some patterning to them?  Most of mine do.

I am glad Loop is willing to break the ice.

Another one to watch out for in the Southwest is Hantavirus:

It’s a hemorrhagic fever like Ebola (though not as virulent) that killed a bunch of US soldiers in the Korean War.
