I’ve *created* hatches like that when chumming carp up at the docks in Knoxville.

I was going to say, why not just give them a compass, a pocket watch, and a knife and then drop them out the back of an airplane in the bush?

    Mike –

Believe it or not, it’s actually illegal to fish the Hooch after dark.

Were the fish rising or did they gorge out in about 3 minutes?

Lighting’s excellent Will. I am sure you’re going for artistic effect here but I would offer this philosophical thought: you are much more familiar with your subjects (weird bugs) than 99% of your audience will ever be.

    Hey Neal –

First of all, Y2Ks and egg patterns are tied kinda differently.  The Y2K was invented by a dude in Fayetteville, Arkansas – I first saw it at a shop there called Ripple Outfitters that is now out of business.  They were tying custom orders based on his pattern.  Now it’s everywhere; kinda funny.  I wish I could remember his name – I think he was a retired U of A professor.

Anyway, Y2Ks should be tied with Egg Yarn, rather sparse, on a delta cut.  The method is similar to tying a standard egg pattern but the result is pretty different.

I won’t walk you through tying an egg step by step because you probably know it colder than I ever will.  I’ve found that Kevlar thread and McFly Foam are key for getting quality egg patterns without much fuss.  They can order you some McFlyFoam in the Fish Hawk.  They have Kevlar there too – get the light colored, thin stuff.

The key to the egg pattern is to let the first hank of material slide around to the opposite side to lock before you place the second hank on.  Tie both hanks on in the middle.

I’ve never seen a flats boat that’s totally decked over like that.

Now, I do agree with the idea that because felt stays wet for much longer, it’s more likely to transmit invasive species when the boots are otherwise dry.

    Hey guys –

If anyone is interested in how I made that graphic, I guest posted over on the PhotographyBay.com blog about it.

    Hey Tradd –

You write it and I’m sure someone (Southwest Fly Fishing, maybe) will publish it.  That’s not my bag, and it’s not what this article’s about. 😉

    By the way – walrus?
