It’s a gear fish. I did pull a fly around but it was a very slow day and bait was the only way. These fish are not so easy on the fly as you well know… When they are spread out thin you might as well be casting in your yard. Soon they will bunch up, and finding them will be much easier.
The wind shut me down completely today so I am headed to Cordell Hull Tomorrow! There’s a good chance that we might get a fly caught Striper on the Hull. If not it won’t be because we didn’t try.

in reply to: Scud shellback material #55009

Your gona have to show me one of those humpbacks Zach. I already use mono for segmenting. For some reason orange scuds do work very good at certain times. http://www.trophyfishingtn.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=26&pos=0

I spent alot of time trying to make a perfect scud and I experimented with lots of different material in the process. One way I found that was particularly effective was one tied normal with twisted/wrapped grey marabou strands as the body material. The little marabou feathers stick out just like the little legs of a scud or Sowbug. I used a green latex shellback and mono ribbing for those and the Caney Fork Trout loved em.

Scuds make up about 30% of the flies in my boxes. Once on the White I tied one on back of a big Woolly Bugger and would swing it down current and strip it back. Some fish would hit the scud (even on the strip) some would hit the bugger. It’s a good way to fish some bigger stuff while still fishing to the little guys.

Ok, maybe just a little less Berkley Trout Power bait scent on your next trip. 😮 ;D

in reply to: Anyone want to organize a fly swap? #55053

We got ten so far who want to do this.
Who is going to organize it?

in reply to: Black Foam Beetle #11497

I have had a few days when beetles worked pretty good. Usually windy days are best when the small beetles are being blown from the trees.

What’s the big diff between this and the d70?

    in reply to: Zach #11458

Not a problem Zach. We did some hiking and just had a good time not fishing.

in reply to: Getting Blackmailed on eBay. #60454

Zach the feed back system is unfair and nobody uses it like it was intended to be used anymore and Ebay won’t do anything about it. Once an item has been paid for, feedback should be left for the buyer, not wait to see what the buyer says about your crappy product. I made mine private. I have a good score which is visible but the feedback comments good and bad can not be read. I had a guy buy a prop and email me questions about it after he won!! He decided it was not what he wanted (wasn’t a left hand rotation prop for twin OB’s,,, well duhhh!.)

Any fly with midge in the name. :'(

in reply to: Sage XP 7wt #11437

Rusty I am very quickly becoming a big fan of Sage. I’ve always said you can get a cheaper high quality rod and you can. But that darned 1wt SLT is really starting to work a spell on me. Got me thinking about how nice a 4wt might be. The action is best described as fluid. Planning to build an Xi2 7or 8

    Sure

in reply to: Streamer Help #11475

Intermediate line sucks for streamer fishing in fast water IMO. It would be good if you plan to fish slower moving water.  What weight  rod will you be using, is it fast or Slow. A fast (sage XP fast) 7 or 8 wt with a 300 or 350 grain shooting head works very well. You’ll get to where with one false cast you can lay 60 to 80 ft of line out with no problem. I can’t come anywhere close to that with intermediate and one or two false cast. Read Kelly’s book man, it might change the way you fish forever. It covers everything from rod and reel choice to some really good patterns to how to fish them. Orvis depthcharged line has served me well for two years now. It is a bit pricey at $79 though.

BD, once a bait chunker, always a bait chunker, and lovin it! ;D

Two or more on that narrow river is too much current for me. If they drop to one all day on a weekend, let’s go!

in reply to: Looking for beta on the Elk river. #11394

Hey Dbunch sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner but it was a rough weekend. The Elk is a decent river but I just don’t fish it often enough to give any real helpful advice on it. There are several access points, the most common is going to be the one directly below the dam. There’s another one down stream on Ferris bridge road or something like that. I really am not familiar with the area so I can’t give you directions. What you should do is invest $13 in a TN Gazetteer and find the access points with it. The Elk is a decent river but not my favorite by far. I might suggest that if you’re driving from Chattanooga, you go more east towards the park or Hiwassee, Tellico, etc. But that’s just my opinion…

in reply to: TN Check In #11380

Glad to hear you guys didn’t get it too bad up there CaneyB. I left work to go get my children and we got caught on the road. The only shelter we could find was Wal Mart so we ran into the store at the last min. The hail started about the time we got in the store and about that same time, my wife called to report a tornado sighting in our area. Needless to say, the sound of golf ball size hail coming down in torrents on a metal roof and wondering if that horrible sound was a tornado about to rip the building apart was a stressful few moments for everybody there. We left for home only to get hit again at the house with another severe hail storm. All ended well with the only damage being our vehicles and maybe the roof shingles. We are extremely thankful for that.

BTW CB, how does the river look?

Hey Zach I have mentioned this site before I think. There is a review of the shooting star on it. Thought you might want to check it out. They also offer free shipping on everything.

Hey Zach I sent you a reply yesterday. Have you emailed me again? Check your junk folder…

in reply to: Rusty from Winter #11355

I will bring the Zip Cast. Me and the kids went back to the field yesterday and I played around with the 5wt a little. I might have made 90′ on one cast but that was only once. I am working on the things you suggested BTW. I need to get into a better warm-up routine! I wear myself out too soon to the point where even keeping 30′ of line in the air is painful.

After I cast till my arm almost fell off I took the girls on an exploration trip to the river where my Grandfather had taken me to fly fish with live crickets when I was their age. We walked through the woods and fields, fell in the mud, walked in the creek with our good shoes, and just had a fun time. My Lab even showed up on the trip back. He sniffs us out every time. The highlight of the trip was when I ripped my slacks on a barbed wire fence… The rest of the trip the girls would talk like Sponge Bob Square Pants saying “Whoops,,, I ripped my pants again” and just laugh. They were astounded when we found the river and couldn’t believe it had been there all this time. Daddy I love this place! Can we came back here and swim in the summer? Eeeew yea, and you can fish while we swim.
Just before bed the little one asked, daddy can we go back to the river tomorrow? You need to wear some better pants if we do hehehehe!

    I think they’re hooked! ;D

in reply to: My favorite Carp fly in the world! #55137

You got the scanner thing working. I’ve been tying copper flies for a few years. I first tied them for red fishing, which they do great for. But, I’ve also caught bass and trout with them as well. I use dumbbell  eyes instead of a cone. I’ve never tried them for carp–now I will.

    Bryan

Yes I did and that is indeed THE way to Photo flies. Thanks for the tip ;). I did a few others and the pics are on my site. All I had in the house was my streamer box so all of them are WB style flies that have been great patterns in teh past.
