I’d buy the 7d hands down. I’d also consider going with a 17-55 2.8 over the 15-85. The 17-55 is a pro quality lens you’ll never outgrow as long as you shoot the crop body.

Of course, some people get away with 250, especially with a super stiff rod like Mike’s throwing.

I can’t imagine a much sweeter casting set up then the one I mentioned above. Admittedly I am bad at overlining my sink tips in order to let the rod do more of the work. Another favorite of mine is the 350 on an Xi3 or CPX 9’wt.
My first sink tip was a 350 that I fished on a fast 7wt that I built. I did that for years because it caught fish. I still do it from time to time. It’s easy to dampen the back cast by releasing some line on the back cast, then feathering the forward haul initially. In a tailwater with lots of CFS and blue skies the extra weight getting down and “staying down” can make the difference. Some days it doesn’t matter.

I guess my point in all this is that grain wt guides are just that, guides. Sometimes the situation calls for a heavier line and unless you want to Trout fish with a 10wt,,, you adapt.

Actually, a well matched rod and shooting head is much easier to cast then a floating line with a big streamer on the end. If I’m throwing anything larger then a 12, I’ll be throwing a shooting taper line of some sort.

KB, my favorite Trout/Streamer setup is an Xi3 6wt with a 250 grain head of some sort. The head should be 25′ to 30′ for my liking. The Streamer Express clear tip would be a great choice or Rio Streamer tip in a comparable grain wt.

Lately I’ve started using suffix 30 pound mono for backing and shooting line. You can make all kinds of heads for it but you’ll have to play around to get them just right. It shoots and lays in the boat floor better then any of the integrated lines IMO. It’s thin dia  allows your head to sink faster but it is more challenging when you get a large fish on. I’ve managed to get used to it and have landed some nice very Striper using it over the last couple of years.

    That was awesome! Thanks.

Welcome to Mid TN Jay. We are blessed with lots of awesome fly fishing opportunities, maybe not what your used to but good fishing none the less. Hop on my board sometime and ask around. There are some great guys that frequent there.

I followed this guys advice and I’ve not had any data issues to date. There are some other great tutorials on this site as well.

Do this before you do anything.

Zach I own the SA clear tip SE line in a 250, 350, and the Rio Striper lines in too many grain weights to count. Between Jarrod and I we have more then 50 Integrated lines. I keep about 5 or 6 reels in my boat bag that can cover most situations. Be it fishing Musky on a tight river, Hybrids on the lake, Striper in big rivers, or Trout Streamer fishing. Last year on one of our trips to Nantahala Lake  I borrowed a friends setup that was loaded with Suffix and I really liked it.

Since then every time I’ve used it I liked it a little more. Now I have three reels spooled with it (you don’t need backing) and a shooting head wallet. I’m not saying it’s better I’m just saying it works well and IMO casts further, easier. There are drawbacks to the smaller dia but I’ve been able to work around them. Give it a try with an old broken shooting head sometime. It takes time to learn it and you have to adjust your cast. Most people hate it because it doesn’t act like an integrated head and never give it a fair shake. You have to get used to it.

I was against non integrated heads for years. I’ve changed my tune. Suffix Elite 25 pound makes a great running line IMO. You have to get used to casting it (it takes a different style of casting) and handling it due to the small dia. The ticking isn’t a big deal to me. I don’t loop to loop it. I put a braided loop on the head and just tie a small knot to that loop.

Very clean and crisp. Well done, love em!

The coat market is definitely the place to be watching the closeout bins.

    Zach

No doubt, I picked up a Cabelas gore-tex packable jacket for $39 in the bargain bin early this spring. It has kept my upper body dry more then a few times this summer already.

Jason it’s noting real special. It’s just been so good to me for the last five years I want to keep it for myself as long as possible.

The biggest weight difference on any of these highest end rods will be felt mostly in the wallet area.

Sounds like fun Zach.  I could also bring the Cosas down.  If I can get away from work soon I’ll give you a shout.

I’d also be  interested in Trout fishing north GA.

I pretty much always use my Redington CPX 9wt.
I haven’t been able to fish near as often as I usually do because of work but here are a few from the couple of trips I did get to make this year.

I was playing with a Sage Peacock rod I won at the Musky tournament this year. I got rid of that broom stick ASAP.

    Thanks Corey.

Well, the 1.4 tele doesn’t work with my 400 5.6 if you leave it untaped where it reports to the body. Good news is that I can tape three pins and it not only works but all the focus points work.

Thanks David. Not sure what’s going to replace the Mark IV if anything. Whatever it is I bet it’s going to be pricey. I got my Mark IV before the Tsunami. It went up $1000 almost overnight. I decided to get out while I could and not take a beating. I was set on a 7D then the 5D3 shows up.. Damn them!

A few more from Sat morning. Did I mention that I love Birds of Prey. I’m digging the butter effect I’m getting at 5.6 with FF.

Well some of the stores put together a heck of a package deal with the 24-105, the new flash, battery grip, and a 64 g mem card for a very attractive price. A lot of folks who already had the body bought the package and just sold the body still new in the box. I was lucky enough to find a reputable seller at FM who was selling one of the new bodies way below msrp. After some R&D on the internet this guy was legit with great feedback on POTN and FM so I went ahead with the deal. Got it today and it is a US model with the orig receipt from the store (relief).

The first thing I noticed and didn’t like about the camera is the menu system. Having owned 2 1D bodies I am used to that menu system and layout. This one is going to take some adjustment. Perhaps it’s all configurable and I can make it behave more 1D like. I took it out for a bike ride after learning the basics of the new menu to test drive the AF system that’s supposed to be heads and shoulders above the mkii. I’m not going to rush judgement yet but my first impression is that it’s much more accurate and maybe faster then my 1D was. No question that it’s a quantum leap from the mkii. It really was impressive on small BIF’s. I’d give the AF a big thumbs up but it’s still early.
So far I’m very impressed and happy with my decision. I LOVE that I can have fast AF, Full Frame, very low noise, and amazing IQ, in such a small package. It’s very nice to not have a cinder block around my neck…

This is an example of the AF picking this small fast moving bird out and locking onto it. This isn’t supposed to be a good photo just a test of the AF.
    Orig pic.

    HEAVY crop.

    A larger subject.
Not my best but I shot this from my bike when these two flushed out of the woods as we approached. The mockingbirds really hate Hawks. You really have to wonder how many have met their fate by getting too close or not paying close enough attention to where they are. After watching them torment the Hawks for hours I know they are high on the Hawks enemy list.

A fast AF doesn’t override the basic settings.  ;D I got carried away and thought the camera was just going to do it all for me.

It’s the exact camera I was looking for when I bought the Mark IV. As awesome as the MIV is it’s just too big for what I like to do so I sold it. I miss it madly already but the prices were starting to drop and getting out while it was still bringing good money just seemed logical. I’ll pick up the 5d3 when they decide to drop the price down around 32 or I break down and pay up,, which is the more likely scenario…

I was on a bike ride yesterday (Now that I’m without a body) when a Redtail Hawk and it’s young one landed on an ornamental light pole beside the trail about 8′ off the ground. He or she was used to bikers so it just sat there and stared at me as I stopped right below him. I’ve never, ever, been so close to a wild hawk. I guess it wasn’t a big deal to most folks as they just walked past but as a birder I was completely mesmerized. I’m sure he was looking at my brown hair wondering if I tasted like rabbit.

Yea it wasn’t chocolate here but it was very stained after the 3′ in 3 hour rains we had.
