MemberIt’s the exact camera I was looking for when I bought the Mark IV. As awesome as the MIV is it’s just too big for what I like to do so I sold it. I miss it madly already but the prices were starting to drop and getting out while it was still bringing good money just seemed logical. I’ll pick up the 5d3 when they decide to drop the price down around 32 or I break down and pay up,, which is the more likely scenario…
I was on a bike ride yesterday (Now that I’m without a body) when a Redtail Hawk and it’s young one landed on an ornamental light pole beside the trail about 8′ off the ground. He or she was used to bikers so it just sat there and stared at me as I stopped right below him. I’ve never, ever, been so close to a wild hawk. I guess it wasn’t a big deal to most folks as they just walked past but as a birder I was completely mesmerized. I’m sure he was looking at my brown hair wondering if I tasted like rabbit.

MemberWell some of the stores put together a heck of a package deal with the 24-105, the new flash, battery grip, and a 64 g mem card for a very attractive price. A lot of folks who already had the body bought the package and just sold the body still new in the box. I was lucky enough to find a reputable seller at FM who was selling one of the new bodies way below msrp. After some R&D on the internet this guy was legit with great feedback on POTN and FM so I went ahead with the deal. Got it today and it is a US model with the orig receipt from the store (relief).
The first thing I noticed and didn’t like about the camera is the menu system. Having owned 2 1D bodies I am used to that menu system and layout. This one is going to take some adjustment. Perhaps it’s all configurable and I can make it behave more 1D like. I took it out for a bike ride after learning the basics of the new menu to test drive the AF system that’s supposed to be heads and shoulders above the mkii. I’m not going to rush judgement yet but my first impression is that it’s much more accurate and maybe faster then my 1D was. No question that it’s a quantum leap from the mkii. It really was impressive on small BIF’s. I’d give the AF a big thumbs up but it’s still early.
So far I’m very impressed and happy with my decision. I LOVE that I can have fast AF, Full Frame, very low noise, and amazing IQ, in such a small package. It’s very nice to not have a cinder block around my neck…This is an example of the AF picking this small fast moving bird out and locking onto it. This isn’t supposed to be a good photo just a test of the AF.

A larger subject.
Not my best but I shot this from my bike when these two flushed out of the woods as we approached. The mockingbirds really hate Hawks. You really have to wonder how many have met their fate by getting too close or not paying close enough attention to where they are. After watching them torment the Hawks for hours I know they are high on the Hawks enemy list.

A fast AF doesn’t override the basic settings. ;D I got carried away and thought the camera was just going to do it all for me.
A miss in AP mode…

That’s it’s #1 selling point IMHO when compared to the 1 series…
I’m very tempted to swap out the 1’s for the 5DIII (or similar), but as ever, what might be around the corner is the big question.Nice shots BTW..

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

MemberThanks David. Not sure what’s going to replace the Mark IV if anything. Whatever it is I bet it’s going to be pricey. I got my Mark IV before the Tsunami. It went up $1000 almost overnight. I decided to get out while I could and not take a beating. I was set on a 7D then the 5D3 shows up.. Damn them!
A few more from Sat morning. Did I mention that I love Birds of Prey. I’m digging the butter effect I’m getting at 5.6 with FF.

MemberThanks Corey.
Well, the 1.4 tele doesn’t work with my 400 5.6 if you leave it untaped where it reports to the body. Good news is that I can tape three pins and it not only works but all the focus points work.
