Gunnison/Crested Butte area is a great area, especially that time of year. We tried to fish it last June and the water was too fast and furious for us. But in August, you should be good. You have access to lots of streams, the gunnison and the blue mesa reservoir.

A little closer to Denver is the Arkansas around Buena Vista and the Blue River near Frisco (One plus on Frisco is some incredibly awesome cajun food). You have to contend with rafters and a little more traffic on the Arkansas, but there are enough public access areas to make it fun. You can also head north towards Rocky Mountain NP, and there are tons of places both in the park and on the east and west ends of the park.

No matter where you go, you really can’t go wrong. It’s a wonderful state with great people who are friendly and helpful. What I like is you can fish about anywhere.

    Good luck!!

PS If you like craft beers, I honestly think there are more craft breweries in CO than McDonalds.

Congrats on the new job!! That time between finish and start is very special. I’d venture to say that tiling the master bath sounds like a winter project. Happy Fishing!!

I haven’t had much luck with french presses or filters in the field as I hate the sediment.

You lucky dog!!  I love Branson at Christmas.
As for guides, I love River Run Outfitters, http://www.riverrunoutfitters.com/
I’ve used them before and they’re a blast.

I’ve heard great things about Jeremy at Taneycomo Trout but I’ve never used him.  Let us know how the trip goes.

It’s a little drive but Crane Creek is a lot of fun too.

I enjoy the how to’s, but would wholeheartedly agree with abe. I also like the insiders look at the industry whether it be the fly tyer, rod maker, etc.

I think it boils down to two things:

    • Common Courtesy
    • Common Sense

Whether it’s on the water, the highway, grocery store, etc, it just seems to be rare to see someone use a little common sense and extend a little courtesy.  It’s such a shame for those that do.

As far as religion goes, isn’t fly fishing in itself, a religion??

I’m with Dave on the best place being where one can wet the line.  However, of the places that I have been, my favorite is a location that I can’t even fish.  I can’t even wet the line.  Dry Run Creek in Arkansas.  IA folks helped me plan a spring break trip last year.  My three kids had a blast and are totally hooked on fly fishing.  This in itself made it one of my top goto destinations.

For myself, I would have to say fishing the small, mountain ponds in Colorado.  Something about fishing these that is an absolute blast.  The scenery is very cool and the area is always peaceful.

My destinations are mixed between where I can fish and where the family will go and put up with me fishing.  Don’t get me wrong, the whole family likes to fish, it’s just I can fish for the day where they’re good to go in 2 hours or so.

One of my favorite local places is a small creek outside of Branson MO that is so much fun to fish.

As far as my bucket list, I would love to go back to Missoula and Whitefish MT and fish.  When we were there in the early ’90’s, I didn’t know what a trout was  🙁  My other place that I want to fish is up in the Banff National Park.  It’s not quite the states, but it’s on my list.  Anyway, that’s my list for now.  I usually just pack my rod and see if I have time.

There was a book by John Ross, America’s 100 Best Trout Streams and another about the 50 places to fish before you die.  50 places seemed to have a lot of non state locations where the other was specific to the states.

    Dave,
We’re coming from the KC Kansas area, so Colorado is very convenient.
