MemberIf you’re dead set on trout then these guys have named the most likely candidates. If you want to get into some smallmouth then you have a lot of choices, but they are still going to be in the lower portion of the state. The Niangua is a very busy river in the summer through the trout waters, but the farther you get from the people the better the smallmouth fishing gets.
My buddy Jeff Trigg of Ozark Sweetwater has started running some trips through there and they are catching some really nice smallmouth.
The Gasconade, the James, Big piney, lots of good places to catch a smallmouth. But they are all going to be a little bit of a drive from Columbia.
PS – Everyone in Missouri likes beer. Those that don’t are being asked to leave.

Yes to this. I went with it on an 8wt that I use mainly for smallmouth and it works great. Tim did a great job on this one.

MemberYeah I saw this on facebook before I came here.
I used to get on facebook just to keep up with what my kids are doing, make sure other kids were being respectful, etc. But the kids are running from facebook as fast as they can. That says something about the service.
(ok, *some* Arkansas football content is likely)

MemberI’m on Zach’s side. These tests are interesting and I do usually read them, but if you are using this information to decide on a rod purchase then you are shorting yourself.
Nobody can pick the perfect rod for you just like nobody can pick the perfect shoes for you. You have to pick what fits and feels good to you. I have exactly one rod that I absolutely love out of all of them that I own. It also happens to be an 8wt that is nowhere to be found on this list. I found it because I went searching for the best (for my casting abilities) 8wt that I could find. I cast several rods on this list, 2 in the top 10, but the one I chose outperformed (with my casting abilities) them all by a longshot.
I just don’t think you can judge something like this when everyone has a different expectation from a rod. And if you don’t feel that you should have a different expectation then these guys then maybe you should try to figure out where you went wrong. I don’t think Zach is saying that these guys are doing a poor job, they obviously put some time into it, but it’s just their opinion. Some guys like fast rods, some guys like slow rods, some in between. It’s just makes me sad that someone might buy an $850 dollar rod based off this test when maybe they would have been happier with the $250 rod at #3. Which is an awesome rod by the way and almost won my own comparison.

MemberI see this guy everyday. Him and his buddies spend their days watching me work from their 90 gallon pond.

MemberJon –
They also will highlight the fact that each rod in a line must independently be “dialed in” to the overall feel the designer is going for. So for example if you design a fast action four weight at one end of a line and then an 11 weight at the other, it’s not like you can just take the four weight taper and ’embiggen’ by seven steps. Both of those rods essentially have to be designed from scratch with a single target point in mind. The designers get pretty hush hush about this but I have the distinct impression that the hypothetical four weight and its 11 weight brother might not even use the same graphite, and certainly not in the same configuration/layout.
Great topic, this has always intrigued me for this very reason. You see somebody online looking for a rod recommendation for a 8wt and somebody else comes along and recommends rod X because they have a 3wt that works really well. What? How can you compare a 3 to an 8?

What type of UW case are you using with the EPL3?

MemberI agree with Gierach that there is no such thing as a good fishing dog.
Don’t tell that to my Lilly.

MemberThis might be what I have been waiting for. Been wanting to upgrade from a D90 for awhile and this looks like it has everything I want. I guess we just have to wait and see what it really is when it becomes available.

MemberFoam is my favorite material but I’m a warm water guy at heart. Lot’s of good looking patterns shown already.
Gurglers are my favorite. Easy to tie and amazing to fish.

I also love frog patterns both small and large.

But foam is really nice because you can do so much with it and the possibilities are endless.
This is a new popper I have been playing with. Kind of based off a crease fly look but that mouth creates a mean pop. They can feel it from a distance.

MemberThe amount of material is about right. You really just need to work on the amount of thread and placement of your materials.
When I tie a clouser the bottom color begins after the eyes and the top color is tied in in front of the eyes.
The way the eyes are tied in is correct so it will ride hook point up but it appears that you colors of hair are in the wrong spots. In this case the white will end up being your top color and the purple will be on the bottom.

Member5. DON’T BE A DICK! Stay humble and be cordial to those that are trying to become better. (I know how I have felt when it has been me on the receiving end of being snubbed by someone in the industry).
Best advice yet.
