Hey Chris, I’ve been looking for video instructions for tying those type flies. Do you know of anything.

I found some great looking flatwing patterns but would like to have a deeper profile.

As it now stands, the solution would be for fly shops and line makers having every line available to test when buying lines or rods. I almost always test cast saltwater rods with the flies that I expect to fish most often (with the hook cut off mid bend). As far as I know every shop has one reel rigged with the corresponding line weight to cast and it is often a cheaper “test line”.
To make matters worse, many shops have only a paved surface to cast on.

So I guess what I’m saying is that all shops would ideally have a casting pond, a test line for every line that they carry and enough shop help to spend a half day with everyone who comes in door that wants to kick the tires on some rods or lines. HA, YEAH !

No wonder that my flyline inventory is getting way out of hand.

And Zach, I’m just beginning to try to figure out what kind of boat I need ???

Nice job catching those fish, I can not believe that boga grips still exist. There is no need for them.<br>
    Chris.

    Esplain, por favor ?

Thanks to this thread I have started putting together a fly tying space. I built a 7′ long trestle table with room to work on rods, reels, guns etc. Nearby will be a TV cabinet with room for tying materials. There is even going to be enough room for some of the posters and pictures that have been in storage for years.

For now it’s going to be plastic stuff from “The Container Store” to organize thread and tools. When I have time I will build a tool caddy. I’ll post some pics later.

Thanks guys, sounds pretty low odds even if I had a couple of weeks to show up and wait for it to happen.

Maybe this is a good time to bring up something that has been on my mind for a while now.

I am beginning to loose a little of my love for some of my Simms stuff made offshore. My wading boots loose the bond between felt and boot way too soon, the laces wear out very quickly. I recently bought an insulated flannel shirt and a button popped off after half a dozen washings, maybe less.

Just seems like they should hold up a little better considering the cost. Surely the markup on the foreign made stuff should allow for a little more durability. It would be different if it were discount store brand stuff.

I still love the waders and recently I sent them a boat bag that had zipper problems. They sent me a new one with a later model zipper at no charge. My only warranty experience has been great.

I think most of their products are top shelf, but some of them could use a little more quality control.

I just wish someone would come up with a pair of glasses that would allow me to see fish regardless of water clarity or depth. 😉 If they do I hope they are a publicly held company because I will buy stock.

I have always bee willing to pay for print but other than “Catch Magazine”, which is pretty inexpensive, I have never been willing to pay for an online “magazine”. Hate to see them go, I’ve been buying them off the newsstand for years.

I fished Belize this summer. It was a family trip so we stayed at a resort not specializing in fishing. We were just up the beach from El Pescador. There is a fly shop in San Pedro with guide trips so I booked with them.

The guide I fished with was fine and I would use him again. He did tell me that the El Pescador guides work all year with about twenty days off. According to him they are mostly burned out and grouchy.

I wanted to begin learning to tarpon fish so we spent most of the day on some good tarpon flats. Had two long shots at 50-60 pound tarpon but no eats. They were very spooky. In the afternoon we fished bones. Almost all of them were very small.

Great Steve, I’ll be working in a location without web access for a while. I will check in as I can.

Are you familiar with the West Systems products. They will have just what you need as far as adhesives etc.
That’s a beautiful boat, I’d love to try building one like that.
What’s the story on the boat in the last picture?

Costas, copper lens, green mirror. I like the medium/fast rods with Hatch or Nautilus reels. Clear intermediate, or light blue floating line most of the time.

Great pics! I’ve been taking occasional hikes into the Snowy Range of Wy hoping to catch some goldens. So far it’s been good exercise but no fish.

Tied between my Scott G2 4wt because I fish it all summer, or the Scott S4S 10 wt because that’s what I caught a 30 lb Rooster on.

For sure the piece that I sold and wish I had back…Ross San Miguel #2. Beautiful reel nothing else I know of looks as good.

Zack, it looks like it would serve the purpose well. The drawers look like they have nails holding the sides to the fronts, but they are probably just there because the joint loosened up.

The greatest thing about the cabinet in the link is that it’s old growth wood if it’s all original. That would make the material superior in every way compared to what is commonly available today.

Until this thread appeared, I had forgotten that I used to be as passionate about woodworking as I am about fly fishing. I still love the woodwork but as of last January my tools are in Oklahoma but I’m in Texas.

If you don’t live close to Mark the cheapest route would be to go into a kitchen cabinet shop and have them quote a base cabinet with as many drawers as they could squeeze into it.

I would guess no less than $4000. Depending on exactly what kind of joinery is used in the drawers and carcass. Also its dimensions of course.

That’s a beautiful piece and deserves the best efforts of a cabinetmaker. It would take almost as much time to sand and apply a finish as would the rest of the construction, or at least it seems because sanding is such drudgery.

The material isn’t that bad but a skilled builder, with a shop and it’s overhead is expensive.

Whoa great photos. I didn’t know any part of Baja had green hills. Does that happen seasonally?

I guess it depends on exactly which “cabinet” you meant, and what you meant by “little more than a table saw”. If you are talking about a box with doors (all plywood) then ok I’d agree.
Add drawers etc. the project gets a little more difficult without the proper tools.

After 35+ years as a carpenter/cabinetmaker/furniture maker I just felt that it is very optimistic to think most people can or should take on a project like some of the above pics without some experience in trim and finish work first. After seeing some of the projects posted on this site I know a lot of the guys are well skilled and could do the basic stuff.

I would suggest though that anyone whose livelihood requires them to have all ten fingers might consider buying a finished piece. I’d rather spend my time fishing or tying.

I apologize for the bwaahaaa though, maybe I was thinking of some of my own experiences.
