We’ve had a bit of a crazy start to the Fall season here in SW Montana. Some rivers are up and dirty, others are too low and warm to fish. Last week the Yellowstone blew out for several days and just cleared up this Sunday with significantly lower waters for this time of the year. Had business associates in for a short meeting and two days of fishing. The MZ Ranch and East Gallatin produced well for them on Monday with good weather while the Yellowstone really turned on Tuesday. A few pics to remind everyone how cool it is to live out here.

Looks like the start to a great Montana fall Mike. Glad you’re out there enjoying it – keep the photos coming.

That’s what I’m talking about. Great photos and some nice fish. If I lived out there Mike, I would not be worth anything. Bird season, the fishing……what job? But, getting to come out once a year for now keeps my blood flowing. I’ve got some interest among a few buddys about a cast and blast next October. so I’m already looking forward to that. Here at home in East Tennessee, the tailwater fishing is starting to turn on and we’re trying to finish the duck blind, so life is good and getting better every day.

Put about 4 hours on the East Gallatin on Saturday morning a midst the parade of duck hunters floating the river and lining the banks. Saturday was the waterfowl opener and as usual the teal and mallards on the East got hammered. I did my part by driving birds upstream as I fished. Generally, the duck hunters don’t pose much threat as they have a good view of the river. Whereas in two weeks when the pheasant season opens, I will almost certainly get peppered with falling shot as the ranchers harvest pheasant along the river.

    Mike,
is there a pretty decent population of pheasants in that area most years? I know it runs in cycles. I’m sure gaining access to some good areas may be tough around there ?

I suspect the pheasant population in the Gallatin Valley is pretty strong, especially along the East Gallatin which runs ~ 42 miles through the valley. It almost all private agricultural land. We see pheasants in good numbers all the time in fields across from our house in Bozeman. As for hunting opportunities, I suspect you have to know some one or pay $$$. Here’s an article that describes upland bird opportunities in Montana nicely: http://www.cowboyhvn.com/pay/Pheasant.asp
