Dave I grew up in that area of PA. You brought back some fine memories. Miss bird hunting and seems tougher and tougher to get access on good land that holds birds. I have heard of some grouse in the NC mountains but never tried it.

Take this concept a bit further. I recently did some light tackle articles and had the opportunity to fish with professional bass anglers. What an experience. If you want to learn tackle, your favorite warmwater lake and just how to pattern fish-book a trip with one these guys. I catch more bass species on the fly than I ever have. Even in colder months. Has any had the same experience? Any one have a fly equivilant of the Shakey head? I am using alot of meat whistles similiar to the jig and pig with great success as well.
Sounds like a carp challenge. For these situations stealth is the answer. Either stake the boat or post like your on a deer stand. Pick a spot with a back drop to cover your movements and shadows. Then do nothing but watch then watch some more. Pick your shots at feeding targets. Try dark flies with bright legs like a RLD.12 or 14 ft leaders will help you not look like you are throwing “rocks” at them. Spook a few and your done so be patient on the presentation.
Bob is indeed correct on correspondance issues. There is also an inland license as some lakes require a captains license. If your taking out clients be sure for above the demarcation lines. Check your lake rules. From a liability issue alone it is prudent. There was an incident near Charlotte with a guide having no license. An accident on the water did not go well for him so you never know. There is some gray area on inland waters.
Lake Arthur is an option with a boat rental option.Mainly largemouth. If you want to drive less than an hour you can fish the Yough river off the rail lanes(the town of Smithton,off I-70 is one area). If the water level is good, it has fantastic smallie action.There are shuttle and canoe rentals all along the river.Again I used a bike. There is plenty of area around the stadium but focus on Southside bhind Steeler training facility heading up river towards Kennywood and the waterfront area. Be sure to eat
I would fish all around the Point. It is definitely urban but there is plenty of rip-rap and you can have ez access in the park and also from the southside via the rails trail. The trail goes along the river so a bike works real well to hit spots. I grew up in the Burgh area. I have not fished there in years but I do not think fishing access has changed.Hey if you see Big Ben on the running trails run stick with a big Clouser on the backcast
I have good luck with bonefish flies and the wooley worm. Stealth is key when approaching this fish. I frequently stake out on grass carp travel lanes to avoid spooking. Regardless of the fly for grass carp present it at eye level. I have success when grass do not have to move up or down in the water column.
Look for lurking fish amongst the spawners who are pre-spawn and are very aggressive. Forget about the ones thrashing.
