Sing-Ray says the Blue-N-Gold is unavailable! Is there an equivalent type from someone else?

Zach, the Mountain House is good if you was prepared dehydrated. If you want to go hard-core, get the NOLS cookbook and do it like the Outward Bounds folks.

    Zach,

Do you have any old pictures

Must be Alaska…I think I recognize one of the bears.

A new collection of Harry Middleton stories (previously published in magazines) was just published. It’s “In That Sweet Country” and like anything Harry Middleton wrote, it’s beautifully written and entertaining. You can get it from Little Rivers Fly Shop in Townsend, TN.

Neal, Great stuff and glad you had a good fishing trip. Montana in the fall is wonderful. If I hadn’t just spent a week in Alaska, I’d be jealous. 🙂

Ditto on the question about clouds and lens type. Also where is that bar? I thought I had been in most of the good bars in Montana by now! Can’t believe I missed that one.

I just adopted a new five-year old Lab who is retiring from field trial competition. We’re learning to sit in the boat, so I made her a special place. Since I rarely have two other people in the boat with me, I gave her the”second seat.”

Zillions of PA fishing licenses. Here they make you wear them so folks are always losing them along the stream.

    Graham,

I’ll compliment you on the wonderful work and then ask the big question. Where in the world were you catching those browns on your fall fishing trip in 09?!

in reply to: Fracked Trout Habitat #45246

    Zach,

I fish the northeast and the Delaware drainage in particular. We have an ongoing issue with low stream flows in the summer as a result of NYC conserving water in their reservoirs. To draw off enough water for drilling just a few wells will stress an already stressed fishery. And, as you accurately note, the chemicals that accompany the water in the fracturing process are “secrets.” That is because they use such compounds as acrylamide. These could easily end up in the main Delaware River and find their way into the water supply of a significant number of people.

Zach, thanks for raising the awareness level on this issue a little higher. We need to drill for gas, but in a safe and responsible manner.

    Zach,

If you haven’t already done so, get a copy of Fletcher’s “Drift Boats and River Dories.” It’s the seminal work on wooden boats and their history.

    Jarrod,

I bought the 70-200mm f/4 this spring. My first long lens for my XTi. I went cheap and skipped the IS (it also adds a ton of weight). Here are some shots from my month long Montana trip this summer. The bear was about 100-125 yds away which will give you an idea of the reach. The West Yellowstone rodeo shot was only about 40-50 yds. And, the moose was maybe only 20 yds.

    Zach,

Not sure what you are after exactly – glossy magazine shots or more informational type stuff.

Great shots Kurt! I leave September 3rd for a week on the Copper River with my son. It will be my first trip to AK so I am really excited.

A real Fye! I’m green with envy! Great shot of your daughter. You’re creating a fishing buddy for life.

Great stuff, Zach! Makes me miss north Georgia. Would you be willing to share the metadata on the waterfall shot? I’m trying to learn the technique this summer. You don’t hump a tripod up into the mountains for these shots do you?

I must admit that I haven’t searched the entire list of posting to see if this is already up, but I highly recommend “In Hemingway’s Meadow.” It is a collection eighteen Traver Award winning short stories from Fly Rod & Reel. Some are by familiar names like Seth Norman, E. Donnall Thomas and Pete Fromm and some from so not-so-well-knowns. All are wonderful reads.

I just started this as well. It’s actually a very readable piece of scientific writing. In fact, the bibliography is nearly as long as the narrative. But, it’s well done and worth the read.

in reply to: damned if you, damned if you don’t #70758

Great last shot, John. I can never get the fish to stay up in the air long enough to get the settings right.

Seriously, cool stuff. The first shot reminds me of opening day where I live in PA. Shoulder-to-shoulder for the first 2 days and then no one fishing.
