    Aaron,

All I got to say is damn.

It reminded me of a story about my uncle, who was also an officer and actually got wounded when he had his gun discharge and the ricochet hit him. As I said early I wear a wristband, more of a metal braclet when I go fishing. The braclet has his name on it. He was killed on a charity bicycle ride for an organization called concerns of police survivors here in Indiana. A week before he was killed he told me how much he wanted me to teach him how to fly fishing, so that he could spend more time and go on trips with my dad, brother, and I. Every since that day he was killed I always wear the braclet, because to me I feel that everytime I go out I’m taking him fishing with me. It has become very lucky to me, and I will not fish if I do not have it on.

    Neal,
The you just posted is the best color combination I have seen so far. That one would be perfect for carp.

Very cool Tim. Pretty soon we start fishing for smallies with hopper patterns down here, its cool to watch them rise up and sip the fly. Just like fishing for trout.

    Neal,

I would go with tan/ light brown in a size 6.

By the way I land carp number 75 on the year with the fly I’m tying for the swap. That makes 42 this year on that fly. I hope it will have the same luck for you guys as it has for me.

    John,

Yeah there were far more people then that. People every 4 feet up from there. I had my switch rod out so I was doing some spey casting to make sure that no one got in my area ;D. At the confluence of the Russian and Kenai there must have been at least 200 anglers in a 1/4 mile. Combat fishing to the definition.

What kind of a job expects you to check out lodges?!

    Zach

As for going up to check the lodge out for work. I am lucky enough to work at one of the only two fly shops in Indiana. I went up to check the lodge out so that we can add it to our travel destinations. On top of getting the chance to do guiding, work at a shop, and travel, I am getting college credit for all of this. I love the word “internship”, thanks Purdue 🙂

I like a little flash when the crayfish are have a molt. Other wise I stick with no flash. The other time I will use a fly with flash is when the carp are chasing minnows.

I have the 1030SW and love it. Here are some pics I have taken with it both underwater and using the macro on it.

Here are some mayflies I saw down here at Purdue.

Some browns that I helped stock.

Found this guy when I was out carping.

    Carp food, yummy.

    And of course some carp.

Carp eat many things. It is always good to have a good selection of flies at the ready. Like Tim stated a bugger is a good fly to have on hand. My personal favorite is a crayfish imitation. The key to using a crayfish pattern is to match the color with the bottom. Some other good flies are clousers. Tie them sparse with little to no flash. Whitlock’s rubber legged nymph is another good chose. This is one of my favorite carp flies. It is also a good idea to have some dry flies on hand and even a hopper pattern. Hope this helps get you started.
