MemberJeff, I’ve gone the other way. I started a project to record my year using a compact system camera after finding myself taking less shots as I gathered more professional gear.
I shelved the dslr kit and am putting at least one shot a day on my Flickr account as I aim to shoot for 365 days with the little Lumix GF-1.
Images have been coming out well enough for my print editor to be happy, and I’m quite content.
The world isn’t perfect however. The little 20mm pancake lens is great and happily sits inside my waders with the strap around my neck but I do miss the extra reach and the complete up close macro of the old kit. I’ve recently adapted to this by getting an old Canon FD 50mm macro which although manual focus was cheap as chips and is great quality.
In short I really like having the portability of the little lumix and having more control than a standard p&s is great. I miss some bits of the dslr kit and find myself seeing the odd thing that I can’t quite capture but on the whole, it’s meeting 80% of my needs.

MemberDid some research into water owned by our largest nature conservation charity, the National Trust. They own so much water across England, Wales and Northern Ireland that I did a bit of digging as to what was available on a day ticket, or free basis.
They publish some information on their website but it’s so out of date I had toi visit a few and make a lot of phone calls to get some semblance of order.
Also have now been approached to write a section for a book which is quite exciting, only a short run UK book but once done the publisher has mentioned trying to get interest across the salt (no not france!).

MemberWell I can’t say that I would ever do what you have just explained (selling my professional gear to downgrade), but the project sounds cool. Why is it that you were taking less photos with better gear? I always seem to take more when I get new/better equipment.

Think I’ve done a forced downsizing.
I was almost tempted to go over to an old film rangefinder but wanted the flexibility of digital.

Memberit was a year of moving beyond fishing photography for me so had to choose from non fishing as it’s been a challenge to get away from the rivers.
3 weddings, a number of portaits, 2 exhibitions and 2 food shoots later and I’m determined to do more fishing this year again.
Had to go for the foody one as client was really happy with the Christmas pudding shoot 🙂
Had an article in Trout & Salmon earlier in 2010 which was nice, and second one is set to go in in the spring 🙂 yay!

using some dividers from local store to make bag internals into the shape I need.
works well for me.

Member…and at 16 mp I can’t imagine you’d need more.
wasn’t it Bill Gates that said no computer would ever need more than 16kb of RAM? And some dead Roman once supposedly said that everything there was to know about the world was already known (apart from the effects of lead poisoning apparently)
🙂

MemberI’d be tempted to get a GOOD compact for that budget.

Memberwhat I’ve found interesting is the quality of the pics you can get even with a cheapie like the fuji xp10 as long as water quality and light is there.
will explore more over winter with grayling and pike but I only bought the camera as a tough throwaway for my son to practice photography with and have found myself pleasantly surprised.

oh, and hello guys 🙂 1st post
