I listed to the podcast and really enjoyed it. Thanks for providing those to us. I stumbled upon your Japenese Scott dealer link and found what I have been weanting for a while now. A Scott G2 8′ 4wt. It’s one of the Japan Specials and I asked Ian if it was possible to get one and he said “sorry” they are only aviliable to Japanese dealers. Dang it!! I’ll have to talk to Jim B about my problem. :'(
I understand about the dynamics of a shop carrying gold capes and saddles and also that top dollar gets top priority. I saw some saddles last year at the dealer show that were amazing and would like to have some of those. The problem is, if I had high end capes and saddles, I probably wouldn’t want to use them. :-/Thanks,

San Juan worms will absolutely catch fish in the Hog Trough. A good buddy of mine has caught numerous big fat 20 inch plus trout on the Taylor this year. Most of them caught on a SJW. More muted colors typically.

The Taylor at the Dam, the “Hawg Trough”, as it’s know, steals a lot of flies from you. I hope you will be taking a tying kit with you. I lost 4 flies in 20 minutes of fishing it, more than I lost the two other days on the other water.

Juan just filled in my blanks: Dos Amigos in Eagle’s Nest. He was always very nice and flowing with info. when I went to that part of the country. Looks like you got your info. I think you should send Juan a case of beer. And no, Naty Light will not do.Dusty

Tricos should be on the river during this time. 9:00-11:00am spinner fall. Small spinner patterns #20-24
Hopper/dry/droppers work great here. Think a #14 yellow Stimi followed by a #16 Cimarron Special. Or a Parachute hopper followed by a #20 BH KF Emerger. Or heck, just go with a # 18 parachute adams and just have fun. You do not want to do a lot of walking on this stream. Find a good stretch of water and work every bit of it. A 4 hour guide trip would only move a couple hundred yards, so don’t get in a hurry to spot fish. You will never see them. There are an estimated 3-4,000 fish per mile in this little stream and they see a ton of people and they fit in the smallest nooks and crannies. Fish smart. Ask Mark how to fish slow and smart. Trust me, your trip will be much better taking it easy. Stay away from the beaver ponds, only turons fish those.Hope this helps.

Anothe guide is Greg Faught. I guided with him on the Cimarron and can say he is THE Best guide on that river, no disrespect to Doc. I have fishe dwith both. Greg can be found hanging out at Dos Amigos Anglers, the fly shop in Eagle Nest.

The Cimarron is one of my top 3 rivers of all time to fish. It is a blast and you will have a ton of fun. Pictures and a report are required!!!!

I didnt fish it…. although the rod was available…I opted to hike it with my girlfriend. Dumb me I know.
That’s the difference between having a girlfriend and a wife.
All the married types here would have fished it and been chewed out my the wife. ;DUnless, of course you find one that likes to fish as much as you do. 🙂 😀

After fishing the Hopper Juan more this summer, I wanted to share some fish photos from Colorado. I have tied tons of these flies, yet for some reason when I open up my box to tie one on, I only have the rattiest looking ones if there are even any. Hopper season is just getting started here so I had better get off the web and start tying.

I like the looks of those hoppers man! Pretty cool with the legs. I like your different colors too. The Hopper Juan has been getting a workout on the streams here in Colorado. I fished it the kast 4 days on the upper Taylor and S. platte and had a blast with it. On thing that makes it stand out ..to me.. is the high viz post. On those days where the sun is low and the clouds move in, it hard to see something on the dark flat water. The post stands out quite a bit and makes it easier to lacate your fly. It also did a great job of supporting heavy droppers like a # 14 Copper John.

You might want to bring a small rod if you have one for some of the smaller creeks in the area. Most people get focused only on the bigger fish and big water, but there’s a heck of a lot of water in the area. A 2 or 3 wt. would be good to have along on the trip. A small stream with cutthroats or brookies would be a blast and that’s what makes Colorado so much fun. You might want that after visiting the Hog Trough (Taylor). Oh, and don’t forget to look at the Lake Fork.

Thanks guys!! I was hoping that I would get some nice comments about the fly, but was floored by the photo comments!! I don’t consider myself as a photographer, so I am overjoyed by the nice comments that you have all left. I know that there is some serious talent here and it motivates me to dig a little deeper and learn more about taking good photos. The resources here are unbelievable.
I am also pleased to see that I have been able to provide a fly pattern to you. I am and have been excited about the Hopper Juan. Why wouldn’t we want to fish a big fly on the surface! To me, that’s what it’s all about. So far, my biggest fish on this pattern is a 19″ brown from the Animas River in Durango, CO. He was in about 8″ of water and I never saw him till his nose came out and took the hopper like it was a #22 BWO!! I love fishing a dropper off the back end of this fly also. I usually fish a hopper and dropper all summer long. I hope to share with you some other patterns that I fish with and maybe do another tutorial or two.
A few weeks ago, I sent some patterns to Montana Fly Company for their consideration. I sent in the Hopper Juan and I hope they pick it up. I shall wait and see.
Please share and post photos of your hoppers that you tied and also fish you have caught using this pattern. That’s why I shared it with you. 😉Juan
