Then the tall order. Climbing a 300ft turbine and holding it all together while I stood on top to get the money shots.

    OMG-I love my job!

Seriously great shots & role model stuff AO. You da man!

in reply to: used nikon bodies??? #68268

I agree with Zach, very hard to destroy. I still rotate out my bread & butter Nikon bodies after 100,000 clicks or so but only as a precaution*. They then become my back-up cameras, then fishing cameras, then IR converted…and so on. They just don’t die.

Regarding your question at hand, I suggest either keeping the D80 and buy her a D60, or give her the D80 and get a used (or new) D300. No, it’s not above your skill level [it’s a camera dude, not brain surgery ;)] , and they’re coming down in price. BTW-the D300 does not have video like the D5000 (and D90) . The D300 & D80 do have wireless commander mode, a very useful and neat strobe feature for fish shots, etc. (the D5000 does not) Plus they’ll auto focus your non AFS lenses (the D5000 does…not). And a D300 is way more usable with cool old manual focus Nikkor glass w/ full metering and exif data.

    Hope this helps.

    * I seriously doubt many used cameras on the market see that many frames. A. Otto’s camera notwithstanding. ::)

OMG what a beautiful place! Thanks for posting Will. Looks like another spot I’m adding to my bucket list.

One last point, DIY sounds like a great idea if you have a month minimum, and a boat, and some kind of lodge outfitter affiliation. As you know, many of the better waters there are float situations, spread our over vast distances, with lots of restriction, running through private land. Plus, you’d have to rent a car. That’s a lot of down time for two weeks on the ground. Like any new area (or Continent/Hemisphere) you’d do less wheel spinning if you get an outfitter/guide for at least the first half of the trip. Yes, it will cost a little more, but the quality of your experience will go up 1000%, he’ll pick you up at the airport, and take care of everything else.

    in reply to: Argentina #37654

Oh yeah, forgot to post the outfitters link. Great people and I can’t convey in words how fantastic the experience was for all of us:

Tell Laura & Gonzalo you found them here as I think they are IA lurkers from time to time. We surely geeked out on cameras and photos on our last trip. Good times and we’re going back soon..

    A few parting shots:

Dave, Are you pretty tied down on rivers and areas? I’ve been down twice and had the most epic experience the last time in January. We split it up into two parts: the semi populated yet still awesome Esquel and the Nat. Park zone up north, including the Rivadavia, Futaleufu, and Arrojo Pescado. But first a week on a private ranch in the Rio Pico area down south about 4hrs by car, which sounds exactly like what you describe above on your wish list; exclusive location, incredible fishing, french trained chefs, in an authentic non touristy location. Obviously great food, but not the stuffy white tablecloth $5000+ per person per week situation. Mucho less $$$s in just a simple ranch house (maximum six anglers, perfect!), a “kincho” in back for eating well after landing 20+ inch ‘bows and browns on big bushy dry flies all day. And a river running though it.

Here are a couple snaps for our journey, plus a bunch more on my flickr page in the “Patagonia 09” set. Feel free to get in touch if you have any ???’s

in reply to: This Is Fly – photography article #68842

Just checked this thread again and what an interesting turn.

TIS is what it is. I usually give it a quick scroll. Sometimes I like it a lot. Other times, not so much. The fish pic article frankly didn’t do too much for me but I know the guys who wrote it and they’re straight up good doods.

Regarding getting paid, it’s really a matter of perspective vs use. For someone in JayMoor, Brett, Aaron or Corey’s position, being asked to display photos you have already taken in the hopes of getting exposure is often a good decision for if you leverage it well. (Yes, me too,=)New photography is another story and conversation). Hopefully you leverage it so well you have so many paying jobs come in you wont have time for the freebies and more trades just don’t do it either.

Aaron buddy, you surely brought your A game on the WCA and rooster trips . Your photos are kick ass!!! brimming with originality and perspective so get yer pecker up brutha and remember that talent & ambition will often get you the first calls, then competence & confidence help make the love go round after that. Keep up the good work!

Hey, who’s the chubby south paw stiff arming it that last pic?

    Nice stuff brutha!

Great job.  Good to see Hemkens too.  Good dude.  Are these for his outfit’s catalog?

    Zach

Not exactly. They’re ostensibly for WorldCast Anglers. Anything else would be a bonus =). Steve provided the WCA connection, some fancy duds, and an extra body for the shoot.  Righteous dude fer sure.

Wow, that’s a cool set of shots, but I have to ask – did you guys slide that raft down into the canyon ?  😮

Oh yes! Two of ’em. 300 meters of south facing & rattlesnake inhabited gravel scree. Brutal! Took the WCA crew over an hour with the help of ropes, pulleys, anchor points, and leather gloves. At the bottom was a primo stretch of Teton River with nary a human in sight besides us.  Epic!

Thanks guys for your kind words. I’ve uploaded a bunch more to my Zenfolio page:

Is that Jim Lampros from the IA board wearing the Helios hat?

Yes. Jim was pretty much our model/stunt man for the trip. Good people!

Very nice! I especially love the b+w shot Cor.

in reply to: Can you check stove fuel on an airline? #37976

I’m sure there’s a shop in Jackson (or any town close by) that carries it, it’s practically the center of the backpacking universe. Not certain about the “Park Stores”. Not sure if I’ve ever seen one.

That said, a drive out to West is never a wasted trip…. 😉

in reply to: Can you check stove fuel on an airline? #37973

    Simple and short answer…No.

Luckily there’s no shortage of camp fuel (of all kinds) near your destination. Remember bug dope as they’re especially bad this year out here.

A few parting shots. More found on my flickr page in the WorldCast set. Huge thanks to Mike and the WorldCast folks & Steve H. and the big “O” for the hook-up!

Thanks for viewing and I welcome your feedback as I did more than the usual post. Too much? Let me know.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Tim!

Day 3 was the upper Teton. Beautiful drift with “The Grand” in our background all morning. Nice trout were caught, a double moose sighting was had, and not another boat encountered.

    Excellent!

Day 2: Teton Canyon. The slide. 800ft of vertical. Knarley!

in reply to: Calibrating Computer Screen #68022

Congrats on the new monitor Bryan. Did you go LCD or CRT? Are you printing at home as well? I any case just get yourself some calibration software (a must-have item) at Pictureline, perhaps something like this:  http://store.pictureline.com/x-rite-eye-one-display-2.html,  then keep it current. Works quite well and you can use it on several screens. Also, don’t pass up an opportunity to see your images on other people’s work spaces.

Regarding your question on another forum, Lacie, DVD, Lacie, Lacie.

Call me if you have more ???’s.

    DB

Good stuff Aaron! I see yer’ puttin’ that reflector to work (or is that a box). Who’s holding that thing?
