MemberBill,
What would you think of the 8 wt. Z axis as a dual-purpose streamer & bonefish rod?
david_dornblaser
MemberIt makes a great spey reel.

MemberIt’s funny, but I just booked two days with a guide tonight.

MemberThis thread is interesting. We travel a lot and use guides 3 – 5 times a year. One of the things that I think is critical is to call and talk to your guide in advance. I have found that the busiest guides, the most professional guides, always make time to return a phone call and to give you a very good lay of the land. Communication up front makes a difference.
BD, mentioned a guide being late. That is totally not acceptable nor professional. As to all of the other points that BD raises, I have never experienced guides like that and if I do the mushroom cloud over the river will be one that I set off.
Tipping, I expect the best and we tip well. Generally 20% and $100 days are not out of the question. FWIW – we hire guides on PNW steelhead or Atlantic Salmon rivers world wide generally. Limited experience with trout waters, and that was mixed, and no experience with guides on smallmouth waters or salt.

MemberHey Zach,
Being an avid Great Lakes steelheader I have gone over to the way of the Spey in a big way. During the Fall & Spring Great Lakes steelhead season I am on the water every week. We also go out to the PNW twice a year. Our style is underhand, compact. Our rods are all in the 12’6″ – 13’3″ range. I visit Atlanta a few times a year, if you want to try some Meiser’s or Winston’s, shooting heads, other lines, I will be happy to bring a few down with me.

MemberAuSable,
I do not like the 9′ 4 wt BIIx but love the 8′ & 8’6″ 4 wt BIIx’s, much for the same reason you do, the tip on the 9′ is too soft.
Winston’s new rod is the BIIt. Like the BIIx, it will be a four piecer, utilizing boron, and will have a compound taper. It will be available in traditional trout lengths and weights. It will be a soft rod with a soft tip. The WT will remain in its current configuration.
I have only cast the G2 and not fished them so I have no comment. FWIW – I recently had a running email “discussion” with Scott’s rod designer about cosmetics and spey rod design. I doubt that I am on his Christmas card list. 😉
As you know by now, the XP is history.
