New Sage Z Axis

With the sunsetting of the Sage XP I would think the boards would be buzzing in overanalysis of this new rod. What’s the story? Is the new rod unimpressive or is it not widley available? As a gear junkie I need my fix. How is the new rod?

When the BIIX came out it seemed like every board was buzzing all day!

Well not so much a review as in just telling us the facts one can read in the brochure or site but a more personal view on the rod. Which is in my view a much more valueable than a review because now I can see ‘where you are coming from’.

I too have gained more interest in medium actioned rod the past 5 years. I already own a Sage LL which is an amazingly smooth rod. The Sage SP which I also own has more oomph. I’ve never really caught on the XP. I’ve recently cast a G2 and it’s a very nice rod series. But there is a pretty big difference between them. I tredi a 885 and a 905 and the 885 felt MUCH lighter and softer. The 905 felt more like a do it all rod.

I cast the 9 ‘ 4 weight and its really nice rod but it didn’t have me reaching for the Visa. I like the Sage SLT rods. They pack a little more power than the other medium fast rods and are really smooth casting.
I picked up the 8 weight Z Axis and I was really suprised at how light it was and how small the stripping guide was. It felt at least as light as a BIIX.

I did cast the 8-wt. Z-A, although not as much as the 6-wt.

How do you think the 691-4 or 697-4 Z-Axis rods would work for stillwater pig hunting? I’m looking for a good 6-weight for my pontoon sorties to Henry’s Lake and other stillwaters that harbor porn star trout. It would need to lift a good amount of line, cast well in the wind, throw weighted streamers/buggers, shoot line well, and have the lifting power to bring large trout to net. What say ye?

Truthfully, Salmo, I have never fished for trout in stillwater from a pontoon boat, so I hesitate to give you any advice.

Zach, since you have cast both Z-axis models as well as G2’s. What’s the difference between both models in general?
