    Todd-

Stop in at Frying Pan Anglers when you get there for the current fishing report.  Cameron (one of the guides) has had some very nice photos on his Facebook page taken over the past few days and passes the info on “go to” flies to Art and Mike daily.  Mike is another guide and probably had more days in the TB this winter than he would care to admit.

I don’t get up there until late June (I work for FPA in the Summer and live in the little cabin on the Taylor Creek property) but by all indications the Pan is fishing very well now and should continue to fish well into early May.  Ruedi is currently @ 66.7% capacity, with an inflow of 277cfs and outflow of 72cfs.

Typically the flow for that time of year is in the 100-150cfs range, which is very easy to wade and even better for spotting fish.

If you need more historical info, including hatches, flies, flows, etc., try:

I never liked the stick on cheaters as they sometimes make it difficult to wade.

    Todd,

The Superfine Tippet that I found listed on Ebay is one of the last Superfine rods made before the introduction of the Trout Bum Superfine rods.

This rod is made on the older tapers with graphite and feel similar to the TL rods.  The newer Trout Bum rods are made using the T3 graphite and are a little faster rods than the older Superfine series.  I have a 8.5′ 5wt, Henry’s Fork in this series and love it.

The downside to the tippet is the reel seat.  With the cork and rings you will probably want a reel that has thin reel feet and, given the weight of the rod (1.5 Oz) you will probably want to match it with a lighter reel.

The Diamondglass rods are fiberglass rods and even slower than the older Superfines.  I have thrown a few of the diamond glass rods over the years and always have to remind myself to slow down my back cast every time I do.  The one that I liked best had the Courtland Sylk line.

    Shane,

There is a solution to this: use the proceeds from your current Garage Sale items to buy one of each!     Once you decide on the one you want, I would be more than happy to consider buying the other one from you, so long as it isn’t in burnt orange.

Orvis hasn’t made the Trident TL for a number of years.

    Interesting read.

I’ve worked in shops over the years and customer service was always a big part of keeping folks loyal coming back in.  There were times when I would make a special order only to find out that I was backordered from my supplier and would either try to find another shop in the area that had the item or would tell my customer that if they needed it quickly they might do better to go somewhere else.  You hate to turn away a customer for a ring up, but it is even worse to loose a customer because of bad service.

I was sometimes hard to explain to folks that even though they could find the item from an online retailer, the wholesaler does try to keep their stocks at a managable level and do sometimes run out, making it hard for retailers to resupply.

    Todd,

    Something to consider in Colorado:

It isn’t exactly a lodge, but Frying Pan Anglers has some very nice cabins located along Frying Pan Road, just outside of Basalt and a great staff of guides.  Since it isn’t a lodge setting the price for your accommodations is a little more reasonable.   When you stay in the cabins you have access to a mile of private water along the Pan and if you take a guided trip with FPA you get a discount on the price of the cabin.  As far as guides go, I would suggest fishing with Mike or Cameron.

March is a great month for fishing in Colorado, and, as a bonus, you will be a short drive from some great skiing at Snowmass or Aspen.

    Shane,

When we were talking about this type of line the other day the topic changed before I could mention that Rio also makes an indicator that will turn any line into the indicator tipped line.

    Timmy-

Though you were heading to NZ?  Good to see you made it back from your summer trip.  You still have the beard?  Mike had me post your pics on the FPA site under the heading of “redbeard.”
