This is good stuff, I was getting a little more serious about fly photography and then had several set backs, mostly broken lenses and hurricanes, but these are inspiring.

I think I may be the only one relying solely on Aperture 2.1, but based on your, and the other’s, comments, I am beginning to seriously consider LR 2.0. I was speaking w/ a pro. photg. buddy of mine, and he suggested Elements as well. Do any of y’all use this program? Or do you think LR 2.0 has the right functions, negating the need for Elements?

I noticed that I lost some color and the vignette going from my program to the web. Do you guys over-do the colors on images you know you will be posting to account for the color loss? I also went from a 15 MB image to a 120 KB…I am assuming this is where the file info. was lost. So, how far does one boost the juice for pics destined for the web?
D.If the colors don’t look right then make sure you are color management is set to sRGB and not Adobe RGB or something else.
I don’t think there’s any reason to upgrade to CS3 for resizing, especially not for the web since you really don’t need Photoshop at all for that.
Ben, that plug in looks interesting, will it run on CS2?
Matt, I’m in Arkansas right now and have got a lot of cleaning up from the Hurricane to do when I get back.
D90 is a consumer camera, don’t doubt it. Nikon has got its customer well trained. At $1k for the body, they are going to sell a bunch of them.
To me, the movie mode is absolutely a killer app. I think this thing will sell like hotcakes. If and when Nikon ever gets the movie mode down into the D40 class, I would consider buying just for that feature. However, I had a more radical idea this morning talking to Carter. I think Nikon should debut an F-mount video camera for under $500. They wouldn’t need a lot of the shutter hardware the D90 requires, or the software, prisms, mirrors, etc. They would only really need the Live View components with the front-of-shutter chip (I assume that’s how live view must work).
I think they could make it slick, make it cheap, give it more than 5 minutes of recording time, and open up the world of F-mount lenses to the video landscape. That would be so sweet.

I don’t know… aren’t cinema camera lenses like really dang fast (like f2 or better)… I don’t know how that thing is going to function with slow f4’s and f5.6’s… jeeze.. did I just call and f4 slow? I also could swear that movie cameras shoot at a relatively slow shutter speed (we’re talking film here)… so the lens has to be super fast… I think that’s right.. so I think your slowest lens would be 2.8… so.. I think folks would be pretty unhappy with a $500 movie camera that needed a $1600 VR lens… But.. I can’t wait to play with it..

I don’t like the way the light is hitting so hard on top of the piece of wood and part of the bend of the hook is burried in a shadow.
I wish they hadn’t ever stopped putting aperture rings on the lenses but I guess that’s a different story.
I’ve gone back and forth a few times on my opinion of that camera, I’m with you on how nice it is to have a switch for everything, I’ve finally gotten to were I can work quickly with it though and the size is awesome when you’re hauling it around somewhere.
You’ve got to spend some time with it but the d40/d40x/d60 isn’t that bad. You can change the quality/size, white balance, iso, shooting modes, auto focus modes, metering modes, and flash modes from the rear screen without opening the menus. Not as nice as having dedicated switches or buttons (you do get one custom function button) but if a small camera is what you want it’s more than workable.
In the menus themselves you can strip them down in your own custom views where only the things you need are visible unless you switch back to full view.
I think it’s a good tool. You might find the lack of an auto focus motor to not be as big of a deal as you first think it’ll be, especially if you plan on using mostly newer lenses. Considering I mostly mate mine with either a 12-24 or 24-85 AFS for general use it’s kind of nice to not have to lug the weight of TWO auto focus motors around on the water…
I’m not afraid to use the d40x with older manual focus primes either which can make for a really slick/light set up. You’ve got no metering at all that way but I’d use the histogram more than the actual meter for that kind of photography and with a understanding of the “sunny 16” rule I find it pretty easy to get correct exposures from the start anyway.
Non AFS auto focus lenses meter but do not auto focus.
They aren’t weather sealed but they feel a lot sturdier than the bottom of the line offerings from the competition.
I can’t recall ever having seen a shot like the last one printed and it would be interesting to find out whether a magazine would print it. I certainly think it is of publishable quality – it’s just the subject matter I’m curious about.
I think the last shot is a great capture of the bird being knocked out of the sky but suffers, more than anything else,
