NOMAD…it was very interesting for me to read the interview and then go through their latest issue page by page and see their words in play.
David King…the Tom Morgan blanks are causing quite a stir on the Fiberglass Flyrodders site…and people are already lining up to get their blank(s).
Corey…I was thinking this past week that I hadn’t seen you around much…but I guess you’ve been winter fishing. Beautiful photos. Do you remember what fiberglass that was? Looks like a Japanese Quiet Loop…but I could be mistaken.

What in the H is in that jar in the second photo that looks like pickled canine pink rockets?HA…they are pickled okra.
Kevin…great thread. Back in the days when I first started fly fishing I wouldn’t take a lunch or even a bottle of water for that matter. I came off the water after dark so hungry and thirsty but I didn’t lose a minute eating on the water.
Over time I’ve come to enjoy a streamside lunch of pimento cheese sandwiches, in the cold months a can of soup, and lately warming up a bit of beef brisket from a local BBQ joint has made a tasty lunch as well.
You knew I had photos of this too…
The tailgate of the Element makes a great kitchen.
A friend recently put this lunch together complete with from his garden garlic pickles, okra, and tomatoes for the deli sandwich.
A fresh baked cake donut and a cup of No. 12 was surprisingly a tasty match.
The barbecue beef brisket on rolls.
Finally…the pimento cheese sandwich on sourdough.We had a great Christmas with family and friends. This was the first Christmas that the wife and I didn’t exchange gifts with each other at all. No loss…since I don’t want for to much that I don’t end up getting anyways. HA…
Seeing Christmas through the eye of a child, ours a three year old little girl, is amazing…and we enjoyed that thoroughly.
I did however add some cash to the kayak fund, got The Drift DVD, and a autographed copy of the book Rises and Rhododendron.
Ah – I see Cameron has converted another disciple. Congratulations Kevin, you will love that rod.

Neal…I’m winning you all over one (in Kevin’s case TWO) custom rod purchase at a time. HA… There really are applications still for fiberglass fly rods, both vintage and contemporary.
Kevin…I noticed that there was not a winding check on the rod. Your choice or just not offered on that rod? Your assessment of the cosmetics of the two is very true. Even the “low end” Spruce Creek rods are flawless in quality of the build. Steffen builds some of, if not the, nicest fiberglass blanks out there. From the builders that I’ve talked to the blanks are arrow straight and rolled perfectly. Builds from his shop are functional rather than aesthetic and his focus is to build the ultimate fishing tool.
I am pining for a 8 1/2 foot three piece 5/6 weight Steffen blank right now as my “Out West” rod to do big water, drift boats, lakes, etc. I’m sure I’ll add it some time this year.
Mike McFarland is taking orders again and now offers three grades of rods in the Spruce Creek series. I’ve got a post on The Fiberglass Manifesto blog outlining each grade…

Expect a wait. Up to a year but I promise the quality of Mike McFarland’s work will make up for the time spent wondering when it will arrive.
Regan…there is a small group of professional builders out there specializing in fiberglass builds…and then a few that are on the come up doing amazing work. If you get serious about a fiberglass build let me know. The Fiberglass Flyrodders (http://fiberglassflyrodders.yuku.com/) site is a good place to look around as well. Much talent, knowledge, and willingness to help there.
Kevin…you’re right…flies do get caught in wool…but once my Patagonia fleece gloves are wet they no longer keep my hands warm.
