Give Chuck Robinson a call (he’s in the Nashville book). He is only one of a small handful of men and women with an FFF masters certification–he is the former owner of the FlyChucker. He is about $40/hr and worth every penny of it. If he is unavailable , then try Steve Nix at Fly South.
An hour or two a with a certified instructor, or at least someone who is a serious student of casting principles, will improve your skills dramatically.
Gary and Wanda Taylor are also master certified, but live near the Hiwassee. You might be able to book a trip with them (assuming they still have time for it) and get some excellent casting instruction, and invaluable fishing tips as well. Plus, the Hi is an absolutely beautiful river to float and fish.

I don’t have any experience with the Sony, but have owned a lot of Nikons and Canons and would offer this: while the Sony looks like a nice camera a Canon or Nikon digital SLR would give you the foundation for a nice photo system.
Both companies make their own glass and manufacture fantastic lens’. Both make great dedicated flash units, winders and motor drives.

The Fly Chucker used to carry it. I didn’t think to buy more last year when Chuck closed his shop because I was still pretty well stocked. Seven months later I was feeling the bottoms of my pockets looking for scraps.

I haven’t tried the Loon product yet. I’ve been pretty content with shot. A San Juan guide–same guy who developed the simple thread midge ties that are popular now (Yong?)–employs a pretty neat and simple way to fish shot. It stays put and is much easier to cast. He begins near the terminal end with smaller lead and then spaces it up the leader with increasingly larger shot. I carry tubs of micro and standard sizes, but use the micro the most, which is kind of hard to find.
I bought a tube of Aqua Glo last year to use at night for snook; I haven’t fished it yet. I am going to AR at the end of the month and will probably spend part of a night experimenting some.
Does all of this beg the question, “Are we sissys if we can’t cast 9 oz of fishing equipment for a day?” 😉
Beer. Far too many good ones to narrow it down to just one. Scotch is alright for backpacking, but I’ve never really cultivated a taste for it.

I’d love to convince my wife we need to purchace Aperture . . .and a new Canon 5D, but I’d have an easier time having affairs with five different women at the same time.
I’m re-reading “The Brothers Karamazov” the Bantam version translated by Andrew MacAndrew. I have “No Country for Old Men” by Cormac McCarthy waiting in the wings. I think “The Longest Silence” is the best narrative written on fly fishing.

Thanks for the reply. You’ve given me a good reason to save $50.
I have a Heddon and South Bend rods that the guides have given me some problems. But, I don’t fish either of them often enough to make a big deal of it. I use SA lines on my other cane rods and am very pleased with the way they shoot.
I was interested to get an opinion on the Cortland given that it has been designed with bamboo in mind.
