MemberWelcome back John. Easy to see why you took the 16-35, it would be a tough shoot otherwise. Nice shots beside the boat.
Good luck with the bears.brian primeau
MemberI agree with Brian D. after a certain point of the day I am not looking beneath the surface at all. Once the sun is below 30 degrees it only reflects and does not penetrate anyway. Even with Polarized lenses you won’t see much except the odd flash at the surface but only if the sun is behind you.
I am intrigued with those Smith PolarChromic Ambers though. I just read up on them and never heard of a yellow polarized lense until now.
Maui Jim has a new Palm Green HT (High Transmission) lens as well. I put some on but not used them on the water.brian primeau
MemberHoly crap dude! Looks like somebody pulled the plug on your river.
Let me guess… Mosquitos brought little aprons and their own forks just to help keep your mind off your aching feet and ripped apart hands.
Oh Ida had words – “just shoot me!”Nice that you got some fish though.
I’m betting not many folks have seen that part of the river
;D Ya think?
What part of what River? 😮
I think if I was going to fish that river I would leave the Kayak home and take the Mountain Bike.Fun stuff thanks for posting.
I’m hoping that this lack of rain and lack of anything to melt won’t mean our rivers will look like that this summer.
The rivers here are already are at August levels.brian primeau
MemberCongrats Zach. Happy lucky 7th. It’s a nice place to hang out.

MemberJoel, pardon me but I think I’m in love with your wife dude! She rocks…”my wife wanted to stay out longer.” Huh…while you froze your clackers off. ;D
You don’t need any fish man, you already have a keeper. That’s awesome.
I gotta show this to my wife – She’s the best but she has about as much interest in fishing as I do in shopping for shoes!brian primeau
MemberSorry Zach, I did say Josh…Last time on here was talking to Josh about Chile.
Wierd though…not even a clue I did that. Perhaps the Josh / Zach thing is a visual brain fart. Sorry. No disrespect intended.Zach, I used the Kumho test. as I was considering non-scientific expert opinion. Seemed to work for me this time as it allowed me to use my own discretion.;)

MemberAwesome site Matt. Your shots speak for themselves and the text pops!
Congrats on your cover.brian primeau
MemberAs I mentioned in my post Josh “I take all this with a grain of salt”. I could really care less what he personally says about the rod. I know well of his bias as it is well documented all over the place for those who look.
What that report did for me is put the weight, price and a pretty decent list of contending rods in one place. I am fortunate to have access to casting most on the list and make my own choice.
So I cast the rod along with several as mentioned. To my surprise…I liked the Hardy. I would not have even picked up the Hardy as it had never been on my radar. Fortunately in this case IMHO I agree and I love the rod.
“rods which it does carry are all at the top of the list.”
Josh – he carries Sage, Loomis, Winston, TFO, Orvis, Hardy, Greys, St Croix. Redington….
The rods he carries better be on that list. Other than Scott there isn’t much else out there. If I recall correctly the S4 got tops 3 or 4 years ago and in 2007 the G2 did better than the BII.
Don’t get me wrong Josh, I’m not trying to defend him but with all due respect your comments are kinda….harsh.
I do not have a ring in my nose, and as you have seen in my past posts – I am a proud Scott rod aficionado. 😉

MemberI am inclined to buy good equipment and keep it for a long time, I am by no means a tackle junkie…however last year after reading the results of the Yellowstone shootout.

I tested out a Hardy Zenith (Sintrix Nano) rod.
I tend to take all that info with a grain of salt but in this case I wanted a 6wt to take to Chile. I haven’t owned a 6wt for years but wanted one with balls for the winds of Patagonia + the ability to cast long for the once every few years that I do go for bones or beach snook. I also wanted it to be rediculously light to balace a Waterworks ULA force.I did not want to like the Hardy, I have liked a few of their reels but NEVER one of their rods. I cast it beside 5 other rods (all on this list) before I bought it.
It is very light and casts to within a few wraps of the backing with a single haul. (For my arm that’s good) Above all it cast a nice loop throughout all distances and had nice feel. I do think that the nano rods are worth checking out. This Hardy has recoil guides too.
I think 5 or 6 out of this list are nano.
Zenith, Legend Elite, NRX, and BVK. Pardon if I left one out.
Take a look at the price of the TFO BVK!An added bonus is that they purport not to break easily. Hopefully that is the case because I left it in Chile because my buddy broke the S4 I bought him last year. >:( So I brought his S4 home so I could send it back to Scott for repair.

MemberJon, you’ll love that line.
I used the TT Nymph line for years because it chucks the beadheads + lead + indicator on a roll cast , mends out to distance really well, and still can cast a dry near as delicate as the regular TT.brian primeau
MemberA line many of us used before the Sylk was introduced was the Royal Wulff Triangle Taper. It is a WF but the front taper is amortized over a longer distance than most wf’s.
It casts like a dt but shoots like a WF but not chunky like most WF’s.
It is mid priced. Good luck.brian primeau
MemberI had a proto about two years ago and didn’t know it was for spey casting so I tried to overhand it.
The line will load the rod no trouble with a 1o of 15 foot backcast and you can really send it. The line will go like hell but it never lands straight it just dies. I think when I was casting it the loop opened up too quickly because the head is so short. It feels like if you took a bass line and cut off the front taper. Like a club!
The only way to make it work overhand is to perhaps add a front end like maybe a poly leader.
If it’s for overhead that you want, this is not the line.brian primeau
MemberJoel and Barry – just got an update from my friend in Coyhaique.
The riots are really bad right now. Most of the tourists have left and there is no gas. My buddy was able to guide because he has 2 trucks and both had gas. Tomorrow he has to take his clients to the airport and the trip which takes usually 1 hour will take 3 hours because there are three roadblocks between Coyhaique and Balmaceda. After that he has a 20 litre spare then he’s out of business.
I would contact your people down there to see if they are still operating.
My friend saw no guides on the rivers the last few days he assumes no one has gas.
Tourists are safe, it’s just darn inconvenient and no gas.The worst trouble is in Puerto Aysen – just past the Simpson but Coyhaique is having it’s own troubles.
If either of you require more specific info or get contradictory info from your outfitters send me a PM.I asked my friend to update me with photos etc over the next while so I will hold onto the info unless you guys ask rather than take up the board for all this.
Joel may have better luck in a month but for you Barry you might want to take alternative measures. It may end as fast as it started but it does not look good right now dude.

MemberBarry and Moosedog – the town was boarded up a bit last week due to the protests but my understanding is that they left the small vehicles alone.
There were gas shortages because they didn’t let trucks through but my buddy is on the Simpson today fishing so I think things are back to normal or close to it.
They are protesting the cost of living and goods and services prices in the area because it’s so remote. Last I read the government is at least listening.
I’ve never heard of people being threatened or anything close to that.I don’t know if either of you guys are DIY/ staying with friends, lodges or what but if you need a local contact in case of trouble, send me a PM and I’ll hook you up.
Have a great trip, both of you. Post lots of pics!
The last few days have been windless and fishing on the Simpson has been great. My buddy is sending me photos tonight. You have to get on the Paloma – it is fantastic and has big fish. Emperador Guillermo as well, smaller but lots of nice fish. Those guys don’t nymph much other than hopper/dropper so if you are so inclined you will nail nice fish.
Have at er!

MemberGreat story man. Amazing that she hauls around with you in that weather, and catches fish to boot!
Has she got a sister?brian primeau
MemberSimon, I was corrected on the beetles. My buddy in Chile saw it and corrected that the small one is not a female Cantaria but a Dung Beetle. No wonder he didn’t stop to chat with her.
Thanks, Steve I recognize the term. You better wash your hands.

MemberThere are lots of great rods out there but seeing how you have already suggested the Vantage vs the A4 it would appear that you are looking for a mid price point rod and have done some homework.
Either rod will be fine for what you want to do. For my part I’d rather the A4 merely because it’s a Scott and their entry rod is a good one that they aren’t likely to render obsolete next year. Both rods are similar but I think the A rods are a tad faster. Both will work nice close in. The A4 might have a distance advantage but that’s up to you.
I have fished the A3 but not the A4 in a fishing situation but I am sure they are similar. Have cast the Vantage and A4 but not fished them.
You also said that you wanted it for larger rivers with small flies as well as small streams.
Since that is the case then you are right in choosing the 8’6″ at a minimum but more likely the 9′. It will allow better handling of the line and better roll casting and more distance.
Another option is the St.Croix Avid 9′ 4wt. Nice rod not too expensive with a great action and pretty, may be a tad cheaper as well.
Yes ideally you want to have a golf bag full of rods at every length and every weight but a 9ft 4 weight is as meat and potatoes as a 9ft 6wt.
Use the 6 for streamers but you will find it collecting dust after you start banging fish with that 4wt.
Neither rod will be a mistake but my vote for the A4 9ft 4wt.
Good luck.brian primeau
MemberNice to see somebody getting out.

MemberColin, I used this one very similar and loved it. (It got stolen)

I can see by the image that it works much the same. That notch in the side means that it will shoot straight down for bug shots or portrait at 90 degrees. The trigger system is easy and fast and holds tight.
If it works as well as the Manfrotto – you’ll love it.
Good luck.brian primeau
MemberExactly Neal, he’s killing me!
I have 49 sleeps until Patagonia. 😀
Congrats on the award Tim. Investingating fish was rewarding as well. -
