Not to say Zach is wrong, I just think the opposite would work better.  Strap on some heavy tippet and an indicator and crank the hell out of it when that thing goes down.

Yeah, sorry Zach, but I disagree on the light tippet too.

Or multiply by $200, on the hourly cases…

What is this about?  Florida uses this formula and will certify a state record based on it.  Is that not good enough for you?

    Nope.

    log(weight, in grams) = -4.83 + 1.923 x log(total length, in mm) + 1.157 x log(girth, in mm)

    Not complicated enough.  Try this:

Are you going to be on the “Big Island”?

in reply to: Spam Issues – A Note from Zach #16680

Rusty, are you going to do any fishing while you’re down there?

On the Columbia, we’ve had to go as heavy as 40 ounces of lead to get down 90-100 ‘ in very heavy current.  Fishing whole American shad for bait (around 4-5 lbs).

Hmm – hey Zach, maybe you can find a custom rod builder who’s willing to make you a fly rod in about a 175 weight!

If a captcha isn’t slowing it down, maybe a topical captcha would?  Instead of identifying a weird alphanumeric string, have registrants answer a very simple flyfishing question – e.g., what type of fly is an adams?

Heh – the forum I moderate isn’t just fly fishing – there are a lot of gear guys on there too.

    Consider yourself lucky, Zach.

If you can figure out how to keep a big gob of nightcrawlers from flinging off on the back cast, you might have a chance.

I have heard stories about the “opening day” stuff up north.

in reply to: Teach a Boy to Fish #16578

When I read this post yesterday I began to seriously think about HOW I helped transform a young 2nd cousin (9 years old – 1996) into a very skilled fly fisherman at age 22 (2007).

    See?

in reply to: Teach a Boy to Fish #16573

    Agreed, Carter.

You guys do what you want, but I think you’ll have a lot better chance of teaching a love of fishing if you start with gear, worms, and bluegill than if you start out teaching with dry flies and trout.  I’d wager that the vast majority of us here started with gear when we were kids and later expanded into fly fishing.

Huh?  A 22-inch, 9 pound bass?  It would have to be thicker in girth than its length.  Big bass are fat, but they’re usually not that fat.

The last 22″ largemouth I caught weighed around 6 lbs.

in reply to: Koi Flies? #16437

If it’s a park, you may want to consider a “bread ball imitation” fly.

in reply to: Koi Flies? #16435

Genetically, koi aren’t that different from common carp.

Thus, everyone knows the village green can only support 10 cows, and everyone knows the village’s 20 cows will ruin the green for everyone, so it becomes a race to see who can take the fatted cows home first before the green is ruined.

And one villager becomes unsatisfied with the profit margin generated by two cows, so he buys twenty cows of his own to graze as much as possible before the other villagers bring their cows along.

They are thick down here in west georgia. Kent may weigh in with a report. He guides down here and has been on them for two weeks now. Hybrids are hitting too!

Zach, the white bass are going full blast here too.

Commercial fishing is out of control.
