MemberThe Caney Fork is my “home water” – it is about an hour from Nashville, and it is the closest trout water to Nashville that is worth fishing right now. Good news is, the fishing on the Caney has been awesome this year.
The two primary flyshops in town are Fly South, (615) 251-6199, and Cumberland Transit, (615) 321-4069.
The entire Fly South store is devoted to fly fishing; Cumberland Transit is more of a general outdoors store with biking, backpacking, and other sports, but they do have a nice fly shop in the back. Game Fair, Ltd. south of town also has a flyshop, but I don’t know much about it.
Either Steve Nix at Fly South or Ronnie Howard at CT would be an excellent guide to show you some good fishing and be beginner-friendly for the gf. Steve is a certified casting instructor.

MemberOK, now for the other guy (sorry forgot your name) if you want someone who will take you out & doesn’t mind if your wife is along just for the ride & doesn’t mind if you fish streamers all day let me know I will take you out in Michigan for some good fishing. Ask Cameron, he knows me & we have been friends since he was a rank beginner fly fishing dude. I love nothing better than slamming big browns & bows on spaniel size streamer flies. Oh yeh & if we run into the evening more than the customary time limit of other guides, too bad because I don’t mind & I won’t cry like most will.
Sounds like a good offer to me.

MemberYour instructions will be, “Do not cast. Do not touch your rig. Sit and wait.”
EXACTLY!!! They must teach this instruction at those “Guide Schools” – half the float guides in Colorado seem to think these instructions must be given in an official speech on the put-in ramp before every float.

MemberYou know what I hate? I can’t get a decent fishing trip if I bring my wife along. >:(
On our vacations, I used to go on guided float trips whenever I could. My wife’s not a hardcore angler – she likes to fish a little, but really she just likes to get out to the outdoors and relax. So she likes to just sit in the boat, read a book, and ride along in the drift boat or raft while I fly fish. I used to think that by doing a float trip instead of a wade trip, she could come along and we could spend the time together while I fished, instead of me leaving her behind at the hotel for the day.

MemberTrout definitely have a great ability to change the shade of their skin depending on the amount of sunlight exposure and the color of the bottom they are sitting against.

MemberDo any of you guys fish streamers at night, or are you all fishing topwater flies?

MemberThanks for the compliments, guys.

MemberYeah, the picture does look a little more “contrasty” this morning than it did last night when I worked on it. That’s one thing I hate about a laptop – if I’m running on battery power, it darkens the screen to conserve power, and I tend to forget about that. The result is that I overcompensate on the contrast and intensity adjustments.
The fish was caught.

MemberYou think I could cast that with a 4wt?

MemberUnfortunately, I failed to make a note of the weights, but they weren’t much different from the last “bass on the fly” tourney on Percy Priest back in May (I’m sure you remember that one, since you won it and all… ;)). A little bit lighter overall, I think. As I expected, pretty much everybody caught big numbers of fish, but it was a real struggle to find fish that measured over the 14″ legal size limit. Bass were schooling in the backs of the creeks eating small threadfin shad, and you probably could have sat on those schools and caught 50 or 60 bass by noon – but they’d all be between 10 and 13 inches.
Big fish was a bit smaller too – around 3 pounds I think. My partner got that one – good for an 8 wt. G-Loomis Cross Current rod (sweet!).
Still fun stuff. I’m ready to get back to some trout fishing now.

We won the tourney!

MemberI’m going to concur with Mike. If I wanted to listen to the radio, I would have stayed in the car. 🙂
I especially don’t want to hear someone else’s radio.

MemberCompare that fish to those two we caught on planer boards. I think we caught hybrids buddy – state record hybrids in all likelihood.
You can’t compare the big-bellied March/April fish to skinny summer and autumn fish.

MemberI’m pretty sure thats a hot tub up on the poling platform, right above the hammock.
Wow, that is truly a work of art.

MemberI have the Olympus and I like it a lot.

MemberI wish there was a way to really target them.
There is – but the main challenge is keeping a turd on the hook during the back cast. 🙂
