MemberI guess it should really be Gurglin’ success, but whats the difference. I think you could run a hook through a wine cork and some of these fish would hit it at night. This girl absolutley slammed the fly, and gave a great fight. It is by far the best fish of the year so far for me. The bummer was on the last cast of the night i hooked up anothe big one, he took it on the second try, and he threw the hook, oh well i guess.
FYI, to continue a duscussion from another thread, i think the shorter shank hooks are doing a slightly better job of hooking up than flies tied on the big 2 or 3x long hooks. We still were only averaging about 1 outta 3 or 4 hookups to strikes though.
And i probably should apologize in advance for added text, but the graphic designer in me couldn’t resist.

MemberWe fished from about 9 pm till 4 am, typically it seems the best time is about the first 2 hours after dark, but it all depends on conditions – amount of moonlight, how fast the water temp is dropping, etc. It typically doens’t get good until it is dark enough to where you can’t see color anymore.
As far as flies, we have gone away from the traditional deer hair mouse fly, in favor of foam gurglers with a couple rubber legs on them. Deer hair mice take a long time to tie, tying with deerhair is a pain, and they don’t float as well as the foam. At first, we were dressing up the gurglers with a bit of deerhair for an overwing, some krystal flash, and whatever else you wanted to throw on them, but this weekend the flies we were using was literally one piece of foam with and a pair of legs tied on the hook. i started with a trailer hook also, but after the first 3 fish were hooked on the front hook, i cut that off too. Now i have a lightweight (albeit still pretty wind-resistant because of the surface area of the foam) with no other dressing to soak up water that i can cast using a 6 wt line on a 4 wt rod.
If any really wants to get into it, get a glow in the dark line from Rio. They are the whip for this kinda stuff. Rio stopped making them, but made a special run for a couple of the local shops in michigan. Call these guys of your interested, they still had some last time i was in there. http://fishbaldwin.com/

MemberNice Eric!
The last few times I’ve been out it has cooled considerably and the moon was big and bright.

MemberThat will be fun, i keep telling myself i need to get out and see some of the other water in michigan, but with the cottage only about 5 min. from the PM, and a growing family, its hard to find the time, and hard to beat the convenience.

MemberDo any of you guys fish streamers at night, or are you all fishing topwater flies?

MemberI fish small streams at night. You can’t effectively fish a streamer withiut being able to lay out the path you want to mend line to get propper streamer motion. All big topwater mice, frogs, muddlers, etc. Lots of deer hair.

MemberMy opinion is that top water is more fun but I wouldn’t discount fishing beneath the surface.

MemberStreamer fishing certainly works at night, and i would dare say that fish seem to miss the streamers less than they do the topwater stuff, but thats just me.

MemberGotta love night fishing. I’ve only tried a couple times. Found that I missed a lot of fish using a mouse pattern. Have heard since then that you should try and not set the hook right away like a normal strike. Supposedly and, particularly with a mouse the fish will try and stun it or pull it under by the tail to drown first then circle back around to inhale. Has anyone heard that?

MemberI’ve heard that and experienced it Steven.

MemberNothin spectacular this weekend Eric. A few teeners like this on Sat nite – nothing Fri.

This is just the only picture I took. When a night time brown slams a big muddler, they usually hit so hard they hook themselves. If they miss, wait a few minutes and go right back to the same spot. So will he, if he didn’t taste steel the first time through. He will hit again.
Has anyone ever used any of those red LED headlamps. I have one and it works great . You don’t loose your night vision when you snap it on. But does it scare browns like a white light does? I know if you shine them with white, they will split . They’ll come back in five or ten minutes but you have to wait. I was just wondering if it was the same with red. Maybe just hoping….
