I don’t do any kayak fishing but the folks at LA fly fishing do and they are really helpful. – http://www.laflyfish.com/.

I do all my fishing out of skiffs. Nothing beats bare feet. I wear socks when its really hot and sunny. For boats with molded in non-skid I wear Croc’s. If you go bare foot don’t forget the sun screen!

    Bret & Neal,

Just PM’ed you contact information for the guide.

We have two spots that I would consider big fish, shallow water spots (sight fishing). The most well known is the Biloxi Marsh which is really in LA but easiest reached from MS. It’s a huge area and almost exclusively fished by MS boats. Fly Fishing in Saltwater had a story on it in the last month or so.

We throw a lot of crab patterns, tans, browns, coppers. Clousers work. Rods run from 6 to 8wts. Quick and accurate is more important than distance.

    Neal,
Good red & sea trout fishing down here all year. Summer brings jacks, ling, ladys and tripletails. Most of my fishing is for reds in the Biloxi Marsh off the coast of west Mississippi (typical LA marsh fishing). The barrier islands are also good.

Know nothing about Strippers. Still looking for my first flounder on a fly.

You really need a boat to fish down here. We do have several guides who specialize in fly fishing.

I’d vote for the 18-200 DX VR. It’s the only lens I take in my skiff. When running Its packed in a Pelican 1300 case. Case holds a D200 w/lens, filters, extra battery, extra memory, lens wipes, etc.

Do most chargers not run the ipod off AC during download?

When I hook my ipod to my desktop Mac I can charge and download.

When I download directly from my CF cards (via a CF reader) to the ipod there is no charger/power supply (at least not one avail last year) – every thing is running off the ipod.

I used an iPod for my keys trip last year. It worked great but was really slow (1meg cards). I had to recharge it after every card :-[. I’m using 4 meg cards now and don’t think the charge will last that long.
If you can find a cable that runs the ipod off AC during download it would be almost usable. This year I extended my stay to make is reasonable to bring my computer ;D

    Zach,

How well does Lightroom run on your iMac? I have an older dual PPC G4 that I’m thinking of replacing with an iMac. Lightroom runs OK but seems to be constantly processing.

    Thanks,

Can’t go wrong with the Nikon 18-200mm VR. Its a great lens and only a little larger than the 18-70mm Nikon. I use it 99% of the time.

Light tents work great. I use three lights on stands (sides and top). My camera has software that allows me to control the exposure from my computer and view the results full size. I keep adjusting lights/exposure till I like what I get. Seeing it full size really helps.

Let me add my 2 cents for my first post to this site.

    1) I fish saltwater and all my reels are Tibor (Riptides to Freestones and a few Back Country Lights). All are cork drag. I want a drag that will start smooth and release line at the same pressure throughout each and every run. I won’t own a reel I can’t palm to add drag.

    2) Retail prices run mid $500 to mid $600. I picked up some cheeper via several fly fishing event silent auctions and discounts from dealers.

    3) I set the drag where it feels right. I do consider what I’m fishing for, tippet size and rod action. I tend to go lighter. I’ll crank down the drag late into the fight when I think the fish is broken (but never before). Heavy drag is added via my palm. Never broken off a fish due to  too much drag (that I know of).

    4) I’m more traditional but if someone invents a clearly superior reel I’m there. I like function over form and all thing being equal I’m going with the traditional look/feel. I’m also a big fan of tactile feed back and sounds which I associate with traditional reels. I’m not a big fan of the traditional fly fishing dress code/uniform :).

    5) If your lucky every good ding tells a story and if it doesn’t I make one up. Ding/scratchs that don’t effect performance are no problem. If they made a type 11 anodization I’d get it not to prevent scratches but for reliability. Reels have to be reliable in all conditions and for more than just a few years. I fished many years with my Grandfathers reels and hope my grandkids can do the same with my reels.

    6) Hummmm, don’t know. Really don’t know anything about synthetic drags. So far cork is working for me. Good whisky uses cork so put me in the cork camp :). I won’t try synthetic until I learn something about it.

Since it was mentioned let me make a knee-jerk comment about sealed clutch/synthetic disc reels that I know almost nothing about.  I like to see what’s gong on with my drag and don’t think I’d buy one unless I could work on the drag. In my light tackle spin fishing days we used teflon, felt, leather and oil to hot-rod our drags. If I could hot-rod my drag, for better or worse, I might get one.
