Scott, think you are on the right track. If you are developing a writing/photography business, don’t give your stuff away. Learn to negotiate as you are inclined.
I was contacted by a publisher this spring wanting to use two of my photos. When I quoted her $175 per photo based on the magazine’s circulation, size of the photos and model release (which I had), she said her budget was not that big. But she was using them in a story in a travel magazine and would include a mention of my business in the article along with contact info. I agreed to a $50 per photo deal. Not great, but it included a plug in the article.
She later emailed and said her customer was wanting full rights to the photos and cancelled the deal (if that’s true, her client was looking for microstock and he probably found it elsewhere, which is fine with me). I still got mentioned in the article. So long and short of it, I got some published acknowledgement and made an editorial contact without giving anything away.
Reputable editors and publishers will pay for material. Scoundrels will not.

Thanks for the kind words, Scott. I know a lot of anglers on this board regularly catch big(ger) fish, but for a casual angler, like a lot of my customers, it is a life-time event. I just love a good brown trout like that one. Such a worthy fish for a sport angler to catch.
Thanks, Brain. I heard recently the Corps anticipates having Table Rock back down to 917 by mid-July if the weather cooperates. So, that may mean better conditions in 2-3 weeks.
Roaring River is always a nearby option for a side trip. If you fish the catch and release section early, you may be the only there. Anglers often don’t start showing up in there until mid-morning. Check with Tim Homesley at Tim’s Fly Shop just up the hill on 112 towards Cassville. Tim’s the most knowledgable person about fishing the park.

I got this one last week while dredging stoneflies on the bottom along a current seam against a big eddy.
28″ long and just a touch over 10lbs on the Boga. Not sure what kind of carp it is……other than a stonefly eaten carp.Whopper of a catch. I would have been screaming for someone to bring the net, although I’d never fish to a trout actually spawning
Brian. There has not been for several weeks now, nor will there be wade fishing available below Beaver dam for sometime. Not until Table Rock drops about 10 feet to around 920, and even then wade access will continue to be restricted until it is brought down to normal lake level of 915 msl.
We just got an inch of rain here close to Beaver dam this morning and across southern Missouri. There is a chance for at least another inch over the next 4-5 days according to the folks at the NWS. If that occurs, we may be looking at flood gates open once again on Beaver, Table Rock and Bull Shoals or any combination of the three. Just depends on where rainfall occurs. Regardless, lake levels on the three just mentioned will be starting to creep up the remainder of Memorial day weekend and the beginning of this next week.
I fished the tailwater with a couple of customers a couple of weeks ago, and we caught a few rainbows (nice size by the way) on crayfish and small streamer patterns. No rumor. That was in my report several weeks ago ;-). I suspect there are also a bunch of big stripers in the tailwater. Water depth of the tailwater at the dam is about 14-feet during non-generation.
Unfortunately, wade anglers are going to find very few low water days on the tailwater this year. There may be a window of low water opportunties as the Corps draws down Table Rock and before it starts to evacuate flood storage on Beaver, but its too far out at the moment to tell for sure.
Generation flows have been rather modest since the tailwater river stage is so high. Boating will be a good option if you are comfortable with that option. As Table Rock Lake level decreases, flows from Beaver powerhouse will increase under generation load, so boaters need to be aware.

Zach, thanks for your explanation. Count me firmly in the fan category re Landon — he’s an outstanding angler and a pretty cool guy. I’d be happy to post under my real name, but until retirement comes along, that ain’t gonna be possible. Hope you can understand that.
I ran into Gierach recently at a fly shop on the South Platte, a river he’s chronicled often during his career. He claimed to remember me from a newspaper interview I did with him many years ago at his cabin in Lyons, Colorado. Who am I to argue?
Later I watched him fishing and noticed that he waded with the aid of an old tree branch. No fancy wading sticks for JG!
Gierach is a very cool guy and, despite his entrance to geezerhood, he’s still pretty sporty with a fly rod in his hand. I showed him a pic of an 8-pound brown I caught on the South Platte last year and he seemed flabbergasted that it came from the river we were on.
Don’t know if he still brews up coffee streamside as he once did, but that’s the cover pic on his new book. Here’s hoping it sells well. Gierach is one of those authors who has actually improved over the years, as his prose becomes leaner and his wisdom deeper.
It doesn’t really bother me…..I don’t catch shit anyway.
