Those are pricey guns to knock around in the woods. Even used ones.
If you really are after grouse you gotta be in the thickest nastiest stuff.Turkey season just ended in my WMU. No birds on my property this fall. I hunted another property and it wasn’t meant to be. Saw 8 roosted turkey along the river last night. Day late, dollar short.
I have been grouse hunting alot, despite how warm it has been. woodcock numbers have been good and plentiful.
Was supposed to do a cast/blast in MI this year, effing swine flu got in the way of that one.
I used to use an O/U, but switched to an english-stocked spanish SxS last year. Ugartechea to be exact. Sold the O/U and bought another sxs in 12ga. It’s a joy to carry at 6 pounds and I shoot it semi well. There are very few O/Us that are light enough to carry all day in mountains. Red labels are heavy, franchi “lightweight hunters” are nice, but hard to find, some SKBs are light but the barrells are thin and ding way to easily. (I had one) I don’t like the safety/barrell selector on many modern OUs. They all tend to get stuck eventually- the type that slides forward for fire/safe, and the same switch moves sideways for barrel selection. Get it stuck in the middle when a bird flushes and you will want to wrap it around a tree.
If you are allowed to carry 5 shells in your state, forget the ou or sxs. buy a nice light autoloader.

Actually, in those small creeks, sometimes they don’t do much.
Main slogging/whatever I have is a Lowepro Vertex 200- ( I’m poorer than JB so have less gear) :)))) Cam bodies /300 f2.8/12-24 f4/105 f2.8/flashes /all the other stupid stuff I bought that I thought I would need…….. walking camera flea market.
Good w/resistant pack with decent support for long hauls- I hate top /fancy compartment bags- the Vertex bags – toss on the ground open it up( clamshell design and your stuff is at your mercy)
Downside is – empty the pack is heavy/loaded even more so:)))
I have MEC- Mountain Equipment Co-Op hip bags that I use if I’m doing roaming Macro only stuff- ie lightweight that work well for batteries/bits and pieces/tobacco and pipes.
For specialized stuff ( bellows rigs/IR triggers) I use Pelicans modified to accept shoulder straps.
Like underwear choices – I believe cam storage is based on two things- you know what you are doing- so this choice….. you want to cover all bases then this choice……. there is no simple /universal solution.Sometimes Speedos … Sometimes trap door wool Long johns:)))

Just some thoughts-
the issues with the rod line combo on the tailwaters are different than on ponds/lake and there isn’t a solution that covers both.
For the ponds /lakes stuff- simply cast the rod overhead with a DH stroke with a standard WF 8/9 wt SH line – or use

I have a decent option that I have been using/testing for focus stacks that is fairly quick- under a second from release to raw preview.
Lol- I would think having clients see things right away would be a disadvatage not a plus- hey add baloons/animated smiley faces!!!!!:))))))))))
Have you seen any speed differences between asking the software to open images in a editing prog versus in it’s own preview and any differences between those options? Seems different progs handle that differently.
While I am seeing some usefull applications in studio as you mentioned re- feedback on the big screen, I am trying to couple tethering with remote camera triggering at a distance using a phototrap IR system with a laptop for viewing the triggered image at a distance. Cam/Flash sys is 50 ft away and triggered by the remote triggering sys, I am 50 ft from the cam with a laptop seeing the resultant image beamed back as fast as possible.

David/Neal- have you tried alternate software/tethering and seen any speed differences from shutter release to on screen preview?
From what I understand these progs are simply fancy file transfer interfaces bypassing the in cam storage.

The idea that short head lines like Windcutters and Skagit are somehow good beginner lines is BS.
Skagit lines- Skagit lines require a casting tempo and approach that is very different from more conventional DH lines – so in a lot of ways are a special form of DH line. The technique for maximizing Skagit rigs isn’t easily transferable to more convential DH type short/mid/long belly lines as the mechanics of loading the rod/line are a bit different.
Windcutters are not easier/harder than any other DH style line they are simply short belly DH lines. That have a place in the line arsenal like any other line design concept in other forms of fly casting .
I have Skagit lines/short and mid belly and tournament long bellies /Floaters /sinkers/intermediates- all have a place and time None are better/easier they all have different characteristics and need adjustments to casting style and technique.
Figuring out what fishing situation you need to match the line design for – dredging big rabbit strips/skating Bombers is more important consideration along with a good match of line weight with rod -than ideas like beginner line or………
DH rods are a bit more forgiving than might be expected- a 475 gr line can be cast just fine even if a 425 gr might be optimal.
If you are having the line pile in front of you and it’s not hugely under/over weight for the rod and it doesn’t sound like it is- then look at- casting / tempo timing and with short belly lines the amount of head outside/inside the tip.
Derek Brown ( masterfull caster) has a fantastic vid ( old) that has a basic DH casting timing concept – Waltz timing – Lift 1-2 Set 1-2 etc etc that is pure genious in learning DH casting that gives a solid foundation for learning any DH cast single/double/circle/snap/whatever………..
When I got into DH stuff a bunch of years ago- I picked up both Derek Brown and Simon G’s vid/Dvd and Simon G’s book- for what it’s worth I learned FAR!!!! more from the Derek Brown vid about basic foundation concepts that stuck across learning a number of DH approaches and styles.
