I threw the L2h in a 13′ 8 weight in the spey pool with a Scandi head and Way Yin telling me what to do. That is a ton of fun.
I’d suggest a basic Scientific Anglers bubble pack (a kit encased in plastic) available from Bass Pro, Cabelas, or even Wal-Mart.
I merged it in with the general fly fishing discussion board; we can talk about reading and writing here too.

I still have so much to learn about how to use my Canon DSLR camera and lighting effectively. For me it’s a lot of trial and error right now.
Last weekend I went back up to the lake to finish cleaning up some of the downed trees from a bad storm we had a while ago. After I finished the one area the next morning I decided to take a photo of the new lake view from our deck. I tried a Tiffen CP filter that came with one of my lenses and tried to make sure the sun was close to 90 degrees to my len’s point of view.
This is the orginal RAW shot (17 mm, f5.0, ISO 100, at 1/250 sec.) with no editing…,
I felt it was too dark especially in the shadows. So I used LR 3 to lighten it up some…
In the past if I took this shot without any filter and I would have had an all white skyline or a very dark photo. So for me the filter did seem to help with this particular shot.
BTW, I didn’t use a lens cover because I cannot turn the CP filter with a lens cover on. I am doing something else wrong?
Once I get my kids settled back in college I hope to get a couple of better quality filtrers to use.

There was a reel made by Shakespeare in the 1950s-60s which retrieves itself using a spring. It is certainly strong enough to land trout on. The reels are widely available on eBay for peanuts – under $20. I know guys with the Wounded Warriors and Healing Waters programs who have learned to be proficient fishermen (fly fishermen) with only one hand.

The main trick would be tactics and knot-tying. In all probability your buddy will be limited on the knots until he gets at least the use of his hand back for gripping. He would need a buddy to fish close by to help out if he got tangled. Although, to tie on flies, he could try clamping some forceps to the back of the hook, then running the line through the eye, pinching the two ends together in his hand, and spinning the forceps by knocking them against his chest or chin. Once spun, he would be able, I think, with practice, to run the tag through and make a clinch knot, all one-handed.
Tactically I would focus on places where I could fish across-and-down with wooly buggers and soft hackles because that requires a set amount of line. I know for a fact that all the casting and fishing aspects can be done one handed because I’ve tried it. Stripping off line might be a challenge but he could secure the rod under his bad arm (like Jim Abbott used to do) and pull line with his good hand.
When fighting fish, the idea would be to horse the fish in by lifting the rod to bring the fish close, then using the spring to retrieve line as you drop the rod down.
That is bad ass. I have done something similar for a story which is still awaiting publication and it was a blast.
