The Itinerant AnglerStrong entry Colin! That’s what we like to see!

The Itinerant AnglerNo, no limit. I don’t want someone who catches a great fish in May to be shut out on an even better fish in July.

The Itinerant AnglerSolid work Colin! Were those stream residents or were they making their way in from somewhere else? Great shots, tell your buddy he did good too.

The Itinerant AnglerVery cool Travis.

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s awesome Travis. Is that the kind of rig you could use a bigger boat to mothership, like maybe to the Dry Tortugas or something like that?

The Itinerant AnglerNice having you Brad. Can you fish for stripers off the cape (is this Cape Cod we’re talking about?) from the shore or do you need a boat? How far is that from Montauk? As you can tell I’ve never been up that way, but we all pretty much love stripers here.

The Itinerant AnglerHey man –
I got an English degree in college and used to help my friend Dewey Hildebrand out with a defunct website called Fly Fishing Today. Some of the guys here will remember that. One day we decided we needed some content besides a forum, so we both wrote a few articles. One of mine happened to be on a topic which was being fact-checked by Phil Monahan, then editor for American Angler magazine. Phil reached out to me through an old school email and asked if I’d be interested in writing for him a little bit. I jumped on that, and I haven’t really stopped writing since.
Incidentally this site was created when Fly Fishing Today’s servers got hacked and Dewey decided to let it go. So in a sense The Itinerant Angler is is a cousin of that site (which itself was a cousin of the old Flyfish.com in much the same way).

The Itinerant AnglerYES! Ridiculously awesome. You need to pick one to enter into the Biggest Fish Contest too!

The Itinerant AnglerWe wound up getting a little snakebit when we went after these on Saturday — first my motor had trouble (one of the spark plugs had died, an easy fix, but it took a lot of messing with it to diagnose the issue), and as a result of our motor troubles we got beat to the spot by a bow fishing boat! They were out there skewering fish left and right, no doubt to throw them out on the bank. That mentality seriously sucks.
So, apologies to Scott Kitchens for dragging him along on such a busted trip. I’m going to try to get back there this week now that I’ve repaired my motor and see if there are any fish left after the Battle of the Little Bighorn…

The Itinerant AnglerAwesome, Marty! I’m going after some longnose gar on Saturday if I can get away.

The Itinerant AnglerPretty nice for the species, Jay. Did you see the McFlyshop’s video? They had some awesome shots with some bigger hybrids caught on Spey tackle. Y’all are super lucky to have that resource.
Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerThanks Kent! Really appreciate that advice.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Jay, glad to see you getting back into it man. Hope you’re wrecking them.

Those are stripers; they are actually anadromous fish like salmon in some areas, and they can survive being stocked in fresh water. This was in the headwaters of a lake here in Georgia.

The Itinerant AnglerThat’s great Jack, and actually seems like a perfectly reasonable system. So this would be the River Dodder? Does it remain a trout stream through the city of Dublin itself or does it broaden into more of a commercial river by that point?
Also, just out of curiosity, what’s the local fisherman look like? Is he wearing modern European brands and fishing with Daiwa UK-type gear? Is he wearing Simms and Patagonia and fishing a Sage like many Americans? Or is he in more traditional tweed, or some mix of the three?

The Itinerant AnglerAwesome as always, Travis. Crystal looks great too! Got right back in shape after the baby; tell her we said congrats.

The Itinerant AnglerJay you going to see Bull? If this is the kind of trip that you might take twice, you could plan to fish the first time as a spinning trip just to give yourself a chance to figure out the turf down there. Otherwise I am sure there are people here with some local knowledge who could get you set up with a guide (guide might have his own gear so that erases the need to buy stuff; just pay him and consider half of it a rental fee).

The Itinerant AnglerInteresting, thanks Jay. I know you have a lot of experience in this area.

I’d like to give them a shot if you don’t mind some time. Maybe you don’t need that guest 119 as bad as you think? 😉

The Itinerant AnglerJack what is the scenario with fishing in Ireland? Do you have to pay for a beat typically, or become a member of a private club? When I was in the UK I could never figure out how the hell to actually go fishing. Maybe Ireland is better.
