Ah, that is what that white packing is for.
As an avid grouse hunter I have kept grouse feathers for years and I never had a problem. I do pluck them immediately and I do use borax. Then I place the ziploc bags in a separate area.
Also, I do supplement with a English grouse cape and Western grouse cape that I buy online (they are cheap to buy) to get extra shades, colors and sizes. But even those i put in separate bags and throw in some borax to be safe.
The only bug issues I have ever had came from bucktails, not bird feathers.

Out of curiosity, what’s your rough expense (both budget-wise and in down-time) on PCs based on spyware/virus infection versus on Mac?
I have always felt improving air circulation helps reduce heat related failures for both home and work computers and extends the life of the machine. I am just amazed the manufacturers don’t do a better job addressing air circulation in some of their designs. That was the main failure MS had with xbox too.
I have to disagree with these guys. I have treated a number of pelts (pheasant, chukar, squirrel, elk, deer, roadrunner, great blue heron, and then some) both that I’ve killed personally and received from other hunters (not all of those are strictly legal, I understand). I always do the same thing: salt the everliving crap out of the flesh side of the pelt and then nail the thing to a board in my garage for a few weeks (like 2-3).
I’ve had the same salted pelts in my tying drawer now for over 8 years in some cases; no issues whatsoever. Salt is a great preservative, and it’s much easier to use the feathers when they’re not all loose in the bag. Real tanners use Borax and various solutions to make the hide supple (salt makes it stiff), but as long as you individually bag everything in ziplocs (and maybe hit it with some Raid or something to kill the mites if you think you have a problem), I say you’re fine. Just wash your hands when you’re done tying. And maybe keep your personal kills in a separate drawer from your $100 capes.
The one caveat I would add is that you need to completely skin out the wings: don’t leave the bones in there or they’ll go rancid no matter how much salt you add.

Brett, I am curious… what are the main causes of the failure rate? Is it because of poor quality, overheating, worn out parts, or what?

Simms has a pretty reasonable custom hat operation, where they’ll take one of their hats (with their logo on the back) and sew up the front with your logo.
I don’t think you can go wrong either way you decide. I personally use PCs for the same kind of stuff you are mentioning with lots of ram, extra cooling fans and duo monitors. The designers I know all use Macs, because that is what designers want and I never dare question them.
I am not an book author but my $.02 as far the web goes is… The e-book is a cost-effective publishing tool for selling, but you still need to do online / offline marketing to generate the right “targeted traffic” that will be interested in buying your e-book.
Tim raises a real good point, and probably the most important factor in choosing rods is the one that so rarely gets said: very few anglers can actually use a rod to its full potential.

I honestly would have to say the Scott S4s right now, in the all-around category, but it depends somewhat on what you’re doing with it. If I were fishing for small tunoids from a boat and I needed lifting power, I’d probably go with a Sage Xi3. If I were exclusively fishing windy flats, it’d be close between the S4s and the Orvis Helios.
I am not as much of a fan of the S4s eight weight as I am of the nine weight (which I honestly think is the best single rod in its class on the market today), but I still would compare the 8 weight S4s to anything favorably.
You should also look at the latest Loomis GLX rod (not sure which nomenclature they are using currently), in addition to the ones you mentioned.
As always when it comes to rods, you need to test-cast them against each other in as close to the actual fishing conditions as you can get.

Zach, you are numero #2 in the Google Suggest dropdown listings when you type: Itinerant. Directly below the phrase: “itinerant definition” and way ahead of “itinerant golfer”. Not sure what any of that to do with fly fishing, but it looks good.
Oh, and re: John’s point about keyword tracking: I do look at what search terms people use to get here and they are frequently hilarious. ‘Itinerant’ was obviously a terrible choice for the title of a website (I wanted ‘Wandering’ but it was taken). It does convey a certain air of sophistication, which is nice, but I’d say that’s pretty offset when a good 40% of your users search you up as follows:
“itinerent”
“intinerant”
“intenerant”
“intenerent”
“itinirint” (my personal favorite)
and…
“internet”No, this is not the Internet Angler. 🙂
