This board is a great resource for writer so I just wanted to get some opinions on this topic.

I’m currently working on a book that is a how-to for fishing reclaimed phosphate pits in Florida.

I am not an book author but my $.02 as far the web goes is… The e-book is a cost-effective publishing tool for selling, but you still need to do online / offline marketing to generate the right “targeted traffic” that will be interested in buying your e-book.

Going down this path right now with a new book. My two previous books were published by publishing companies and I received a royalty cheque which in the end was 3 tenths of five eight’s of sweet FA.

This time round its ALL MINE. The risks, the funding, the stress, the design, marketing etc etc etc. Turns out its a very big project with a lot of work involved – but I think in the end with complete control over the final product I’ll have something to be really proud of.

If you self-publish I’d probably go with print-on-demand, with a company like Lightning Source. If you publish with them you’ll be listed on Amazon and Barnes and Nobles. If you got with a regular subsidary publisher like iuniverse you might have to print two thousand copies, which I believe is way too much.

One problem with print-on-demand is that if you want to send out a lot of review copies the publisher will probably discount the book for you by only %50.

Finally, make sure you get a good proofreader. I didn’t, then I had to get my book reprinted.

Also, once you start making corrections on the galleys – assuming you do that – make sure you also correct your ms word files, as you’ll need them to upload to kindle and other e-book formats.
