MemberIf by “working out,” you mean pictures of both caught trout and shot grouse, well, I’m not that experienced in grouse, and maybe your success around here is better than I’m used to hearing about, but I’m thinking for the “blast” half, you might want to make sure you’re covered on the “joys of the experience.”

MemberA local shop carried Loop rods a few years ago as their “budget salt” option when I was outfitting for my first bonefish trip.

MemberI’ll chime in, only on the off chance that, even though your profile shows Michigan, the fishing will all be done out west. If that’s the case, any one rod should probably be a 6 because of the wind. That said, my BIIx 8’6″ 5 wt. is such a joy for me that even out there, the 6 sometimes stays in the rod tube when conditions are such that I should break it out. Maybe I just need BIIx 6 wt.
If not exclusively west, go with the 5.
On budget, I’d second the “try a St. Croix” remark.
Good luck.

MemberEh, what’s a hundred miles?
I let FFM lapse years ago, but I’ll make a point to get this off the newstand.

MemberMike,
The forums at http://www.georgia-outdoors.com are a good place to ask for, and get, such info.
Good luck.

1) This may be the first time I’ve seen the terms “gear-driven-disc” vs. “bar-draw-disc.” -
