I picked one up a couple years ago in case I ever go back to the Keys and find myself in the middle of Tarpon exploding on Palolo worms. I have one that should be a dead ringer for those worms.

The problem with moving up to lightroom later is getting your images from one software to another. It can be a big pain and very time consuming. My advice is buy LR (if that’s the system you want) while its on sale. Watch some youtube vids to learn how to set up LR correctly the first time. Then backup backup backup.

From someone who’s been there, done that.

    Great spread!

So how do you like the 7d? Anything you don’t like?

Try look for some older Gitzo carbon legs, they are 50% off sometimes!
a great buy and will last a livetime… and maybe more.

Yep. I was able to talk the guy at the store down to $475 for a set of 1541 legs. It’s light enough that I almost never leave it at home. If I have my camera, I have my Gitzo. Keep the legs and threads clean and it should last a very long time.

Exactly what I thought too John. I have my viewfinder set to show blown highlights. If the image in the VF looks like what I imagined when I pushed the shutter button then I’m happy. It’s good to know how to use the HG and I imagine it’s quite it’s useful for shooting events like weddings, but there is no hard and fast rule for how they should look IMO.

The G is a sweet camera I bought my mom one last Christmas but it’s not the easiest to use in full manual control. IMO the S (S90, 95, 100) series is a little easier to use and has a faster lens. Both of them are very nice cameras that produce excellent images.

Sounds like you might also want a DSLR. If so I’d stay away from the low end

in reply to: sunglasses…any opinion on best? #50888

I went through some BS with Costa over some lenses that kept delaminating. Their CS at that time was pretty poor IMO. I finally got rid of that model.

That said I’ve been wearing the green mirror eliminator glasses for several years now in 400 and 580’s. The 580’s are hands down, the best sunglasses I’ve ever worn. In the fall when the leaves peak these glasses will blow you away. Always wished they would make a 77mm filter in green mirror.

Only negative is the weight of glass lenses. They are heavier but worth it. The crown of your nose might get sore but you’ll get used to it quickly.

Thanks I’ll give them a shot.

in reply to: Canon s95, Any Thoughts? #72921

My thoughts were to buy one and I just did. Awesome, awesome, little cameras and small enough to fit in a pocket.

Adaroma had the kit with an 8g mem card, spare battery, case, and some other junk for $318.

Do you think the heels are thick enough to prevent stone bruises. My crocs didn’t this summer. Those things hurt for a long, long time. I’m still having pain from it.

in reply to: Low price 10-11 foot 6 weights? #50606

I have a cabelas USA made FT (fast taper) 11′ 6wt I’d let go for $125.00 plus shipping. It’s not been used 10 times since I bought it three or four years ago. Bought it for the Cumby then the Cumby died… Three piece rod with tube.

This rod sold for around $300+ new.

Had some Blacktips in the Keys get really close. had to crank up and give chase.

in reply to: Backpacking with gear. #50500

Ok, I weighed the pack without a change of clothes or food/water and it’s 24 pounds. I could still get some nylon pants a few undergarments and a shirt plus some lightweight waders in I think. Might even find room for the camera if I break it down and put it in a dry sack. Tripod would be pushing it..

Zach I’m thinking of trying out the same waters your fish this year. Get in touch if you need a partner. Not sure I can keep up with your skinny ass but I’ll try.

Shoulda went with a dry I think he’s sipping.

in reply to: Backpacking with gear. #50498

Thanks for the great advice so far.

Ben I haven’t yet weighed the pack but where I have it now it’s all I want to carry. I’m going to look into eliminating any unessential weight. I don’t expect to be in much snow with this setup, ever…

I could strap the waders and boots to the pack I guess but I’d want something lighter then G3’s. As for the Camera I’ve got a 1D body that when paired with a lens is massive and must have some protection. Next up is the tripod… It’s a Gitzo CF traveler so it’s light but the B1 head seriously defeats any weight savings. I really need to look into a lighter Ballhead.

They are smooth. No problems that I’ve encountered holding hooks from 22 – 10/0
