Update: Manfrotto is sending me a new ball and stem for $16. It’s still a resin ball but at least I don’t have to throw a nice head away now.

I picked up a Gitzo 1541 last week to replace my antique Bogan legs that seemed like they weighed 15 pounds. I played with every tripod in the shop but when you open that gitzo up it’s evident why it has such a reputation. Rock solid and only 2 pounds.

Something to keep in mind when using the Boga on a Striper or Hybrid is that they have a propensity to snap their head away from you when something touches their mouth. More then once I’ve had my Bogas pulled out of my hands and lost in the darkness. Luckily I keep mine tied to a large section from a round foam pool float. It floats the fish and the grip unless the fish was too green, but even then eventually the foam float is going to win the tug of war.

I’ll say that my purchase of a boga seemed like bad idea at the time. After eight years of being rolled around in a boat and wet most all of it’s life it still works and looks just as well as it did when brand new and I have no doubt it’ll still be working for 20 more years. I wouldn’t even consider anything less if I were in need of that type of accessory.

Redington CPX, Redington Predator, or TFO. I own Xi3’s,

I finally got to try out my el cheapo GND filter. It’s a $13 filter so I wasn’t expecting much. After seeing the results I’ve decided that the P series filters are worth keeping and a must have. I’m going to start collecting some hard and soft  SR filters after this.
Not all were taken with the filter.

I think the Hoya HD CP’s are less then 2 stops as well but like everything camera related a little bit of difference costs alot…

I am going to get a hard and soft SR GND set as soon as I win one on ebay.

Not yet. When I first searched all I could find were numbers overseas. I found that number today after searching a little harder. I’m going to give it a try this week.

I couldn’t find a 1-800 number to manfrotto so I sent Customer Service  an email two weeks ago. Still no reply.
    A little discouraging…

I saw one of those yesterday and wondered how well they worked. Looks like they do quite well. Nice shot Jay.

Unless she really wants the video capability I’d probably look for a deal on a 50D and there should be plenty of deals to be had now that the 60D is out. I would also avoid the kit lens unless it’s part of a really great deal.
USM = Ultrasonic motor. Drives the Auto Focus on the lens.

The 70-200 F4 (non is) can be found cheap and is an outstanding pro quality L lens. If you buy used you can get this one for a song.

For a walk around the 24-105 F$ L is another great all around lens but it is a little more then the lower end glass.

Then there is the very nice 17-40 F4 L that can be had cheaply sometimes. I found one at Best Buy just under $600

Amen on the soup! Hard to beat hot soup on a cold day in the woods or on the water.

in reply to: Finally got a decent Osprey in flight shot. #71407

Thanks Grant and Bill, we were in a boat and the sun was low in the sky casting just the right amount of light at just the right angle. The Osprey was about 60 to 100′ and flying right over the boat. Gota give credit to the 70-200 F4 IS. So far it’s the sharpest zoom I’ve ever owned.

I just saw a Spec Ops guy on TV say that Jello was a great food to pack in. Lots of calories and easy to prepare and carry.

    You’ll be pleased Bob

I not suggesting a 3 or a 5 wt should have non conventional guides but I do think a rod made for big lines, big flies, and big fish, should be built for max performance. Snake guides plain and simply aren’t the best you can put on a fly rod.

Try the zirconium rings. They are very nice and come in several colors to match the blank. The blue ones look awesome on an Xi.

If you use single foot SIC guides you’ll cast even further.

Like sitting on the front porch on the first cool clear night of fall smoking a pipe of a premium mixture of TN and VA tobacco.
