Hunted opening day yesterday just north of Dallas, very slow day with 6 birds total. I will be picking up my son from school and heading back to my farm this afternoon. Hopefully we will have better luck.

    Grant,

I totally agree with you on the Sept. 1st high holy day holiday.

I went yesterday with my dad, best friend and 11yr old son. It was my son’s first opening day hunt and even with his mom’s blessing no school(you have to love those unofficial holidays).  We hunt north of Dallas on my family’s farm in Prosper. Slow in the morning, but we had great shooting in the afternoon hunting a draw that was next to a milo field. Me, dad and my buddy limited out and my son shot nine birds. Also, I hunted with my new lab which was a little frustrating at times. But thankfully, my buddy reminded me that my old dog was not the greatest hunting dog when he first started out. I guess that kind of blocked out the “training years” and only rememberd him at his best.

Overall a great day in the field with friends and family.

Very nice shots Matt. It must have been tough work down in Louisiana: wind, cold, great food, Mardi Gras…

    Zach,

We go crabbing down on the Texas coast every summer and I agree with JT. Pots / traps will yeild you more crabs(usually) with less work once they are set, just set them and leave . String / Chick Neck / Net is definitely less costly and a great way to kill some time, relax and is very cold beverage friendly. In Texas all you need a state fishing liscense. Regulations are pretty basic: there is no daily limit on blue crabs, all crabs must be 5″+ width and no egg bearing sponge crabs. I definetly recomend a good crab boil / seasoning (we use a brand called ” Slap Ya Mama”) with new potatoes and garlic. Pair that with a campari tomato, basil and mozzeralla salad, some fresh frenc bread and a ice cold bottle of Vino Verde.

    Brad,

I agree with Tim about the Ouray hats. They have a good fit and are well made with several options. I am about to have some made for my company as well and intend to go with that brand. I should have my pricing next week, I can let you know what I am paying for them if you want.

    Guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am planning on doing the Brazos and camping at Possum Kingdom SP. I already have a trip planned in two weeks with a group of fathers and sons to go to Beavers Bend and introduce the boys to fly fishing. My son is getting to miss a day of school and go up with me the day before and fish, so I will be hitting both spots over the next few weeks.

    Dave,

I just got my 10 yr old son his first fly rod (TFO NXT 5/6 wt.) for Christmas. He has started casting and loves it. It seems to be a well made rod / reel combo for the money and the no fault warranty is great for kids. We will be taking our first trip at the end of this month to Beavers Bend in Oklahoma, so it will be interseting to see how it works out on the water. I am curious to see what others think about the pink Roos combo since his younger sister now wants a rod but only in pink. As you know with daughters, its all about getting the right color.

I just finished The Big Burn by Timothy Egan. Great story about Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot and the 1910 forest fire.
