MemberGuys,
I am looking to take my kids (8 & 10 yrs old) on an overnight camping/ fishing trip this weekend. I live in Dallas so I would like to stay within a 2 -3 hour drive since we will be leaving after school tomorrow and coming back on Sunday morning. This would be my son’s first fly fishing trip and my daughter will be fishing w/ me and or using an ultalight spinning rod. The kids don’t have waders so friendly waters and ease are important. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tim

MemberTim,
Beavers Bend State Park outside Broken Bow, OK is a 3 hr. drive depending on where you live in Dallas.

MemberYep, Broken Bow. E-mail for directions and where to stay, fish, etc. And you could go to the Brazos R. below Possum Kingdom Dam, on HWY 16, which is about 30 miles outside of Graham, TX. It has been stocked several times this season already. About a two hour drive from the Metroplex, but the camping is no where near as good as in Broken Bow.

MemberYou could also road trip with them to Dry Run Creek in Arkansas. I have a buddy that drives up for the weekend from Dallas several times a year to fish with us. Dry Run Creek is a kid’s only trout stream with some real pigs in it and definitely will keep the kid’s interested (and is free). There is a campground right next to it on the Norfork river.
(Caution…proud dad photos…)
(6yo Parker caught the rainbow on a worm tied by my 7yo daughter, I don’t know who was more excited.)I will also add, that the kids don’t need waders to fish Dry Run as they have put some nice walking stones along the stream for the kids. Definitely a neat place to take kids to keep them interested in the fishing.
I am headed down on Saturday with my 7yo daughter again.

MemberGuys,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I am planning on doing the Brazos and camping at Possum Kingdom SP. I already have a trip planned in two weeks with a group of fathers and sons to go to Beavers Bend and introduce the boys to fly fishing. My son is getting to miss a day of school and go up with me the day before and fish, so I will be hitting both spots over the next few weeks.

MemberIt looks like your decision is made, but this place makes me feel excited like a little kid – http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/ . This weekend is especially important as there will be a series of lectures today and tomorrow on the state of Texas fisheries by biologists – both fresh and saltwater. Look for an article about it in Lone Star Outdoor News’ next issue.

MemberPS – Why didn’t anybody suggest going to salt? Shannon

Member2-3 hours driving is not going to get you much salt except in your skibbys

MemberMatt,
I would agree that the Dallas/Fort Worth folks need to do a get together.

MemberI really enjoy going to Broken Bow. It’s kinda what I consider my home stream because thats where Dusty taught me how to fish. I always enjoy the area too. I always stay at the Hochatown Inn, and they are always helpful and friendly at the Three Rivers Fly Shop. Here are a few pictures from my last trip in December.

It was a chilly and the banks were frozen over!
