I am looking at getting out of my vest and going to a lumbar / waist pack. Efficiency and ease of access to equipment are primary factors in wanting to making the move. I will be primarily fishing day trips for trout and bass fishing on stock ponds on my farm. I will likely be packing 1 or 2 fly boxes, snacks, water, tippet and basic gear. I know that Fishpond, Orvis and Simms all have their own version of waist pack with each having its own advantages. I have also looked at the North Face Sport Hiker at REI, which I like its size but have questions about its water resistance. I will also be using the pack for day hikes with the family. Thoughts, reviews, opinions and any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tim,
I am sure we probably hit some of the same waters, and I have been using the same pack Tim suggests for over a year now, with no complaints. But if you are looking for water-proof packs, this one does not have that feature. That said, though, I have never pulled out a soaking set of truck keys or a wet sandwich I put in the pack, and like Tim, I am not nice to my gear. I would certainly recommend this pack to anyone.

I dumped my vest a couple years ago and went to a waist pack.

For what it’s worth (not much, as you already bought…) I’ve owned a Filson lumbar pack for the past few years.
