Tim AngeliMemberOutstanding report Steve.
Tim AngeliMemberGreat stuff Cor, as usual.
Tim AngeliMemberThere’s always time for “just one more…”
Tim AngeliMemberCheck your PM.
Tim AngeliMember$500.00 range?….i’m still not there!….
Too rich for my blood too, but I still think it’s a lot better than the $700-800 rods that are becoming the norm for many of the major companies. In my opinion, a top-end, performance rod from an American company in that price range is a very respectable offering in today’s market.
Tim AngeliMemberGreat stuff Zach, thanks for posting this.
Tim AngeliMemberAmazing images.
Tim AngeliMemberZach,
Check a farm supply store. I’ve seen them for as cheap as $10-15 at farm supply stores out in the boonies. Fleet Farm has some options on their website as well that are a lot more reasonable than the $80 that NRS and Hyde charge:

Not the exact same thing, but might work for you depending on what you’re looking for in a new seat.Tim
Tim AngeliMemberIt’s a deal mate. Head to NZ and I’d be happy to show you around the places I’ve found so far.
Seriously though, those flies look like they might just be the ticket to get me tight to a kingfish next season. I’m going to have to whip a few up. Is the body just EP fibers?
Tim
Tim AngeliMemberTim,
Here are my answers to your above questions:
I love my CF boxes, but have been using a Sci Anglers waterproof box quite a bit as well. The downside of the Sci Anglers…it’s not actually waterproof. It will most likely get retired soon, as I would hate to lose a few hundred flies to rust.
I don’t care about brand, I want quality and function.
I prefer smaller boxes with lots of capacity (i.e. large CF boxes with inserts). However, when I fish from a boat, I go with larger boxes (Bugger Beast or cheap plano).
I definitely prefer waterproof boxes.
I don’t care about seeing my flies through the lid.
One note for the people mentioning the Cliff’s Bugger Beast and wanting a waterproof version, they actually already exist. The Justin Case. It’s a beefed up bugger beast that’s waterproof. http://www.cliffoutdoors.com/index.php?page=the-justin-case

Tim AngeliMemberVery nice, Jay.
Tim AngeliMemberI sent an email to Sage themselves to get the real answer on this US vs. overseas question. Here is what they had to say:
“All of our rods are made in the same factory on Bainbridge Island from start to finish. We roll our own blanks from our own proprietary graphite from patterns that are cut by hand. From there, every rod is baked, finished and assembled by the same people… the same people make our Vantage to the TCX.”
There you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth. I have no affiliation with Sage, just wanted to set the record straight. As Clark said and now Sage has confirmed, they are indeed 100% American rods, start to finish.
That being said, I fully agree with Zach’s post above regarding the corporate structure and possible overseas sourcing of replacement parts putting the whole US vs. overseas debate solidly in the gray area.
Tim
