MemberPaul, I went through the exact same thing with fluoro to mono connections. I tried every knot I could and nothing worked for me. Someone on here suggested the tiny metal rings that feaher-Craft sells and uses on the end of their braided leaders. I picked some up and tried them last year…problem solved.
For nymphing I have gone to using a butt section conisting of 18″ of 0X and 18″ of 1X. I put the ring on the end of the the one 1X and put a big loop in the other end that gets looped to a braid on my lines. I use corky type indicators. When I want to take off/put on the corky I take the leader off at the loop. I setup three leaders in September, one for nymphing with each of the two reels I use for Steelhead and one one with a fluoro tapered leader from feather-Craft for streamers. Each has a metal ring and I am still using the original three rings. I adjust the entire thing with tippet and when using an indicator I have 36″ of adjustment room on the leader itself. Simple, fast and it works well for me, casting just fine out to any distance I can reasonably fish. The 0 and 1X are thin and sink faster than a more traditional leader formula, which I have found to not be needed. Keep it simple…
Hope that helps

MemberI can’t believe that it is worth their time to register and post on a site like this. Maybe Zach will have to go to an email confirmation system of registration here? These people are pains in the butt…

MemberIf a guy THINKS it makes a difference, it makes a difference. It’s the same thing as having confidence in your fly. I have nymphed exclusively with Frog Hair fluoro this fall(mostly 4X) and have seen a big difference in clear water and am picking up fish in situations that have always given me trouble. With a skill set like mine, I need all the edge I can get… 🙂

MemberThe fiber optic effects on the flies are cool as hell…how in the hell do you do that? I was thinking that maybe you were using glow in the dark materials, then I noticed that the leader in one pic is also glowing.

MemberZach, you are a 20 something hotdog with work in national publications and are doing what many wish they could have/should have. That in and of itself is going to create a reaction from some negative and jealous people. Your writing style has nothing to do with it. If you are happy with your work and your employers are happy with your work, then I think you would be foolsih to concern yourself with such people. Drive on.

MemberThat is funny! “Honey, I need $700.00 to buy the kids a reel” I already hear the hysterical laughing…

MemberIs a multiplier the same thing as an anti-reverse?
steve154
MemberI was thinking that all multiplier reels are anti-reverse. I have absolutely no idea either. We need the anti-reverse feature because they both want to jump on that handle. Everyone I have ever started out does the exact same thing and loose all fish within 2-3 seconds until you can get them to keep their hand off the reel. I hope they are the same thing because, as you mentioned, a multiplier would be cool for charging fish.
Any multiplier/anti-reverse experts out there?

MemberZach, I don’t think they can really appreciate it yet.
Carter, Kaitlin has her own rod that she is sharing with Ryan right now(8 1/2 5wt)and has landed several smaller fish on her own. She is still having trouble with bigger fish though. Ryan has hooked a few and quickly looses them. He just can’t keep his hand off the reel yet. I really need to get a multiplier reel for them.

Memberpaul, I don’t think that is the arguement at all. What I got from all this is that there are those that feel it is O.K. to fish the redds when there is no chance for natural reproduction. I can’t argue with that and no one said anything about it being OK to screw up the spawn because the fish are not native. Everyone who has been around trout fishing for more than a month and does just a tiny bit of reading knows that most trout are not native. There is no moral high ground on this subject. Where it is legal it all comes down to personal choice. There are all kinds of similar points of friction between sportsman all the time. Using an indicator isn’t ethical, using anything but a dry fly isn’t ethical, using dogs to hunt bears isn’t ethical etc… I make no moral judgement on anyone who fishes a spawn as long as they are doing it legally and with as little harm as reasonably possible.
I do not want my fishing to become a source of stress. I am in competition with no one but myself. I have learned the hard way that the easiest thing to do is to ignore and walk away when bubba shows up with his cousins and bait buckets. As long as they are not doing anything illegal there is absolutley nothing that can be done about them being jackasses. You will go crazy trying to “educate” people who have no desire to be educated. Leave it alone and don’t go where people are doing stuff you don’t agree with. It has worked for me.

MemberPaul, that is very cool! Hook us up with that pattern…

Membertroutwag, he is 7. keep after it with your little one.
Mike, thanks.

MemberCameron, it is prime time right now. There are pretty good concentrations of fish at any and all obstructions and it can be fast and furious when they are in the mood. The stream we were fishing is our home water and the mouth is less than a mile from my house.
Crystal, thanks and I will do exactly that when I get home.

MemberJay, define BIG rainbows…I also would really like to see some pics!

MemberNope, no tresspassing today. I am going to wait a few years to introduce them to the life of crime 🙂
We were using my regular old egg patterns under small floats and a few BB’s. They might not have been using fly rods, but we have to draw the line somewhere! The fish were on and the 10lb Stren didn’t bother them so there were no horsing issues. The selfish part of me kept wishing for my own rod…
You are going to have a blast when you can take your little one with you. Start her early. Kailtin was going with me when she was 4 for very short trips and is now hardcore. Ryan is still in the fish, explore, fish mode. His times actually fishing are increasing each time out though. I think today will really pump him up and keep him fishing for even longer periods without getting bored. The hardest part is not pushing it and remembering that when you take them it is all about them and letting them be in charge about how long you stay. Â
Salty, do you have children? Â

MemberCameron, thanks! This was truly a fantastic Thanksgiving.
Sorry for the poor pics. The one thing I can’t get either one to do is hold a fish yet.
The little man with his fish while Kaitlin holds the rod for him

This was an adult fish and he did a great job landing it.

Kaitlin right after loosing one. We left the fly gear at home and took their spin casting stuff for ease of operation(1st time I have ever taken both by myself and it was interesting :))

Great times and they talked about it all day long.

MemberMan, that is cool as hell!!!! Where in Alaska is that?
Is that you with the extended tube 12ga? Fishing in a place where you need to carry some serious firepower just seems like it would add a whole new dimension to the experience… 🙂
steve154
MemberEasy, no doubt I would go to Kodiak Island. I would start with King Salmon in June and finish up with Steelhead in November. You did say no time/budget constraints…
steve154
Memberwhat model did you get? I have never owned one, but would like to some day.
steve154
MemberThat is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
