    Shane,

My personal preference is to fish the park in the fall.

I wanted an 8wt setup that was versatile enought for redfish on the South Carolina Coast as well as Largemouth in KY.

Habaneros taste better but I can’t handle more than one of them mixed in with the chilis in a whole thing of salsa.

    Zach,

Here is a pretty good web page that may help you date your Medalist.  Hope it helps.

Based on this website, it looks like yours is from the period between 1930 and 1937.

Hey everyone, I’m a new member here and a long time fisherman. Bluegill, shellcrackers, and pumpkinseeds are my main quarry and I fish ponds and rivers from an Ultmate 12 kayak and from a Gheenoe. I’ve done very little fly fishing and what I have done has been with a very old fly rod and reel.

I’m wondering what you guys would recommend as a good setup for flyfishing for bream?

Still plently of excellent water to fish on the South holston when the spawning section closes.  Also have the Watauga, Clinch, and Holston rivers within an hour and a half drive.  You won’t find that much diversity in Arkansas.

Don’t forget Smoky Mtn National Park.

Like the other, I would say the Cumberland might not be the best choice right now.

    Zach,

Your wedding story hits home.  My older brother is getting married this year on October 3rd, which happens to be the same day as the Michigan v. MSU game.  I am a Michigan alum and bleed maize and blue, and my younger brother (the one not getting married) is currently a spartan.  Needless to say, we’ll be sneaking out to check the score periodically throughout the event.

Several years ago, a good buddy planned his wedding on the same day as a big game that ALL of the groomsmen wanted to watch.

I have been drinking Fat Tire and Yuengling recently, neither of which is readily available in KY.

    Hey guys –

One of what I guess I would say is my biggest pet peeves is the portrayal of fly fishing in the broader media world by non-fly fishers.  At the same time, these things are a never ending source of hilarity.

I’m thinking of the banking ads showing guys “fly fishing” who can barely cast past their feet (T. Rowe Price maybe?); the online TV show we ridiculed on here recently where the most important piece of gear seemed to be an orange water bottle, and now this article in Popular Mechanics, as located by Marshall and Glenn at MidCurrent.

So here’s the thing: I get it.  Ours is an arcane sport.  We do a lot of things for a lot of good reasons, but those reasons are rarely obvious to a complete outsider.  But let me ask you this:  Would you hire me to write an article about hot air ballooning?  Or jetski engine options?  Snowshoe repair?  Hell no!  So why do the major news outfits persist in allowing non-anglers to take our sport down the rabbit holes of their own fantasy?  Is it really that hard to find someone who can cast to be on your commercial, or someone who has a passing acquaintance with the sport to write your 500 word photo caption?

Get this, from the article linked above: “When fighting a fish, the reel is your most important weapon, and one thing worth splurging on.”  So, you should buy a $325 Sage 4500 CF series reel (which I am pretty sure has a very basic stacked washer disc drag, incidentally, and isn’t even completely made of metal).  Really?  That’s kind of funny, as everyone I know would agree that the fly reel is the least important piece of tackle for any sort of inshore fishing, and basically improves on a can of coffee only by having a handle to turn it with.

In the words of the best mustache on television: “Gimme a break.”

If you find something ridiculous out there, feel free to post it here.  Maybe if we make some kind of compendium of all the terrible fly fishing ads, articles, etc., the collective sound of their suckage will have some effect on future attempts.  🙂

Did you check out the rod that girl (in Black shirt) is using on Feraless.

I fished Otter Creek a while ago and enjoyed the day…  nothing of significant size but here’s my report:

    http://minomdeplume.wordpress.com/2008/10/25/otter-creek-park-ky/

From other’s description, the cumberland and white would be significantly more productive as otter is simply a stocker creek…

The White I am sure is more productive, but is also a 9 hour drive

    John,

I live in Louisville myself, so I can offer a little advice … the Cumberland is an awesome fishery.

Another consideration would be to swing around to the North Carolina side and stay in the Bryson City area. Lots of close fishing and some nice small towns in that area to visit (Sylva, etc.)

    My 2 cents,
