Really interesting and perceptive comments. Apart from the buzz of doing something new and some advantages with mending on bigger rivers I found switch rods to be no great leap forward.

Yeah its fun isn’t it – three people check in ahead of you, two with no luggage except a bit of carry-on and the third person weighs 300lbs but their luggage is under weight then I check on at 200lbs but with a bag 10lbs over and alarm bells start ringing and its out with the credit card. $50 later I sit next to the 300lber and get to share my seat with a couple of rolls of them

That is light for a roller duffel Neal. Is the base good (strong) enough for you to put rods in there without tubes?

Hey Scott, Thanks for that, lightweight and cuts out wind noise is what i want to hear. Does that having a fitting that lets you attach it to the hot shoe.

Good buy Neal. The problem with bag like that of course is that the bigger it is the more stuff you take with you. ;D ;D ;D I find I just have to fill them and carry as much for a 4 day trip as I do for 3 week trip. That one would cost me some serious excess luggage fees.

I like the hard base so I don’t have to carry rods in tubes. I guess its a case of swings and round-abouts.

Currently looking a lot of options. Brands such as Rode and Hama seem to be very prominent. Rode gets a particularly good rap. I have a Rode podcast mike for recording narrations for the DVD’s but its just a tad big to go putting on top of a 7D. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Steve that’s a flat port on the standard housing for a G11.

Some recent attempt with a Canon G11 and housing. I think the key is that I am going to have to get wet to get better shots. Bonefish species is Albula Forsterii.

I have only ever once been pulled up at the gate and then when I showed them the contents of my bag was allowed to board. I must say I’m always mentally prepared for a ‘showdown’. Now that I travel with 2 bodies I have adopted the Dave Anderson tactic of slinging one around my neck. I think they see ‘photographer, probably a grumpy bastard and prepared to stand his ground, we’ll leave him alone’.  😉

Buz you are dead right on being nice though. I have avoided some serious excess luggage charges over the last year by just being nice and having my credit card ready to pay up. Most of the time it works. They are so surprised at someone being polite they just wave you through. 😎

I have had a Pelican 1500 for a number of years but don’t use it very much at all. Issues with excess luggage charges and a lack of versatility at the other end are the main problems. If I was going on a trip that was all boat based with no walking then I might consider taking it but most of the trips I do involve some kind of wading and walking so a backpack is my best option. The pack I put together myself from a WXtex canyoning backpack and a Lowpro insert has been sensational even if it also has some shortcomings (access mostly) but I have learned to work around these. I would definitely get the modular insert for the Pelican case as opposed to the foam which is rubbish really.

The best camo fishing shirts i own are made by Aqua Design, just brilliant.

I spent some time last week with a guy from an Aussie company called Sea to Summit, check them out on the web.

He saw my homemade Wxtex waterproof camera bag conversion and I have sent some design specs to them to see if they can just improve it in a couple of ways. Its a very good option and with a just a little work would be brilliant. I hope they do it because I think the market worldwide is pretty vast. They have some other great products, the merino wool lined waterproof socks should have considerable appeal, there’s a new breatheable product they’re going to use to make water proof gloves from, a lot of really interesting stuff coming out of their designers heads.

On the same trip I saw a prototype for a new line winder that just blew my socks off with its effective simplicity. Its still in the prototype stage but if it can be built commercially (numbers) it will be a killer product.

Plenty of great stuff out there, I think you just need to look outside fly fishing. Its not a fashion crime to wear gear from other sports….. ;D

Tim the only touching up I did was a little sharpening and a little contrast, it was a beautiful late afternoon desert light. This was the same day an hour later with the sun long gone.

    And a day later.

    These are essentially untouched.

    Lovely portrait of Audrey Dave…….

Here is one from the other end of the spectrum. Nat Gedero is descended from Vikings (not obvious is it) and is a commercial cray fisherman who also loves his fly fishing. The pic was taken at around 30 knots, one handed so its not quite as sharp as I hoped but it was the only way to get the sweep of the beard and to catch the moment.  😀 ;D

The 7D would be my choice too. I recently purchased a Tokina 11-16 lens for this camera. Only had it a few days, big issues f2.8 and 11mm but very very good at f8 at most other settings. I bought it for use in a boat where the 17-40 on the 7D struggles a little.

    Anyone else using this Tokina?

Thanks for that information Brian, we don’t get a lot of ice fishing in Australia…… I guess on that basis it would be pretty easy to load up a hole in the ice with some live minnows somewhere near a tree and wait.

I agree Stu. The angle of entry by my reckoning would have the bird crashing into the ice on the side of the hole. Also do you get a bunch of baitfish on the surface in a hole in the ice like that?

They start at around 70 kgs down there……… Needless to say I’ll have my 16 weight and Tibor Pacific with me………..

Sorry about the post hijack – here’s a story on this place in the Southern Ocean. The rock you see in the footage is 35 meters high. A few years ago during a period of calm weather, using a helicopter they dropped some scientists on it to study the lizards that live there. They were meant to spend a couple of days on the rock but were never seen again.

Incredible southern bluefin tuna grounds. I hope we get a window in the weather. No thing else between there and Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica.
