And to me, Carp is kind of a by catch.. They are great, but I would rather take a Yellowfish, twice the fight, twice the skill, twice the fish… carp are in the same/similar systems, but are not targeted hard…

BTW, is that the sea in the back ground?? In Cape Town, there is a place called Coastal Park, where the treated water from a surge facility flows for a few hundred yards, be for it dumps into the sea, this is one of the most productive Carp spot I know…

So when you say taper the abdomen to the body, do you mean build it up as I get closer to the thorax? Ya, the extra thread there is due to they way I did the wings/legs. Held the pheasant tails to one side and wrapped, then held the tails to the other side and wrapped. I was also using 6/0 thread when maybe 8/0 thread would be better for a size 14?
Yes, build it a little.
You only need 2 turns to hold something, just do that…
Not bad… pretty good actualy…
Just try getting the abdomen to taiper a little to the body…
then use less turns of thread behind the bead, you will be suprised at how little you need to hold the fly together… also, you can change them and they will get “lost”, no need to make them indistructable…
I think this shot would be more successful with a better background. As it is now, the snowy background is boring and doesn’t make me recognize that someone was actually fishing in those conditions. The photo is more about the temps/weather than the act of fishing in the temps/weather. I think a darker background of the stream/river would be much more interesting. I love the sunrise reflection in the epoxy over the rod wraps. Makes me miss fishing in Colorado during the winter.
WOW, I can see it now… Steam coming off the water, maybe even have the anglers shadow, the sun glinting of the rod wraps, tall snow covered Rocky’s in the back ground…

Drifter, there are a number of things I can do, several of which I am pursuing and most of which are likely to land said person in front of a Sheriff’s Deputy pretty darn quick. My host has given me unlimited bandwidth for the forseeable future so we can track the guy even better if this happens again. That would be a really bad move on my attacker’s part (and I now believe this was a deliberate DOS attack). I’ve opened up the appropriate channels with the FBI, I’ve identified the person’s true home address (it is not in the remotest part of Alaska, I can tell you that), and I’ve got his ISP, Charter Communications, checking his traffic logs right now. If this proves to be verified as an attack, I will swear out an affidavit in front of my paralegal and mail it to his county sheriff’s office within the hour of my learning for sure.

Basically it is a gigantic jar of paraffin for about $11. I refill my old gink and loon bottles with it. Figure I’ll save around $28,000.00 in floatant cost with one jar of Albolene.
😉You can buy a small house with that, but does it work???
Do you guys use “Shake and Bake”??? Loons Top Ride, or the likes??? I refill it with the contents of the silicone packets that come with digital products…

I agree about the DOF, I was shooting with a long lense, but I need to figure it out… I will be playing with it this weekend.

I tie them as a style, different things, for different times…
My favorite is to spin the dubbing onto the thread very loosely, then wind the copper wire through the thorax allowing in the dubbing to fray out nicely… I have watched the shuck of an emerging nymph and it becomes very mobile in the water, I think the dubbing becomes the gills, very mobile… I don’t tie in any “shuck” as I believe the triggers are in the thorax…
Secondly, I only grease the post, so that it floats very low in the water, with minimal turns of hackle…
Lastly, the post is not only your sighting device, it represents the emerging insect, if you watch mayflies emerge, they break out of the wing case, press themselves almost vertically then, as the tail slips out, they put their legs onto the surface, dry their wings for a second and try lift off, pulling their tail free in the process…
I always try tie in at least 5 positive triggers in a fly, here are the 5…

Red Assed Bastard…Even the originator of the fly had to make a little story. The first published account of it was in a very well-to-do publication called the Piscator, the Cape Piscatorial Societies journal, it has been published for a good couple of years, and in the 50’s when Tony Biggs wrote about his fly, he just called it a RAB, in the next issue he was asked to give the full name, thus Rough And Buoyant… but those in the know, and knowing Tony, a sailor by heart, Red Assed Bastard was the original name…
It works because it rides high, shivers and quivers, and you can see it immediately… also, there is a theory about insects appearing red in the afternoon sun.
Do yourselves a favor, just tie a few and give them a bash… any trout stream, anytime, anywhere…

If I may, I recently asked for some advice and got some guys giving me really good criticism… I learnt a hell of a lot from just a few good comments…
Here is my comment…
The picture, it self is good, the focus is good and the character is interesting, but I see it lacking a story, it says it was cold, but that’s doesn’t tell me more…
In the correct context, like an article of a photo essay, that pic will be great, but as a stand alone, I would like to see more rod…
The Zak and RAD are south african flies? any pictures?
Both are South African flies, so is the Red Eye Damsel…

Fished with a dead dread drift, fish cant resist…this is the poodle variant and slightly over dressed, I like them smaller…
Coch-de-leon variant, or Haylo RAB, great fly…
